Large Hadron Collider

Page 2: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

What is LHC ?

Page 3: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

The Large Hadron Collider is the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator

Page 4: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

It is a 27 km ring of magnets with accelerating structures,

Page 5: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

that push the energy of the

particles along the ring

Page 6: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

The LHC is located in Geneva, in Switzerland

Page 7: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

Currently, there are five experiments at the LHC

Page 8: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

CMS

Page 9: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

ALICE

Page 10: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

LHCb

Page 11: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

ATLAS

Page 12: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

TOTEM

Page 13: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb are built in

four huge underground caverns,

Page 14: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

that are built around the four

collision points of the LHC beams

Page 15: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

LHC Structure…

Page 16: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

Two beams Hadrons, will travel in opposite directions inside the

accelerator

Page 17: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

Every time the subtomic particles go around the ring, they

gain more energy, hence go faster

Page 18: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

Then, physicists will use the LHC to reproduce the conditions just after the Big Bang

Page 19: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio
Page 20: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

They will do this by colliding the two

beams at very high energy

Page 21: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio
Page 22: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

Expert physicists and experts gather from all over

the world to help out with these experiments

Page 23: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

No one will know what will happen as a result of these collisions…

Page 24: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

…as this experiment is a

never before tried experiment

Page 25: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

So kids…

Page 26: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

don’t try this at home

Page 27: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

Past

Page 28: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

In the begining of the 1900s, Europe

dominated in physics

Page 29: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

But unfortunatley, the conflicts of the 1930s-1940s held back

european science

Page 30: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

By the early 50s, the Americans had understood that further progress needed more sophisticated instruments.

Page 31: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

But while Americans were developing new

instruments…

Page 32: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

european scientists were still using basic instruments and proceeding slower.

Page 33: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

Physicists like Rabi, Amaldi, Auger and Rougemont

Page 34: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

realized that there was only one way

to proceed…

Page 35: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio
Page 36: THE WONDER OF CERN...by Stefano Gallizio

So in 1953, CERN was born.
