The importance of taking photos for your
business website
What does taking photos have to do with website design? Good question!
This article explains why it is important to take photos for your website design, as well as content on your website, such as pages and blog posts.
Using good quality personalised images could help with branding, as we as making your website more unique and personal.
Whether you are using an off the shelf website template, else had a website designed specifically for you, chances are if you are running a business, there are some images incorporated into part of your website design (template / theme).
It could be a static image in a header, perhaps a slideshow on the homepage, regardless of where the images are, chances are you would want more personalised images, rather than stock images.
As well as images within your website design, you can use images within your pages and blog posts.
Images if used correctly can contribute to search engine optimisation, plus with social networks such as Pinterest, images within content, are playing an even more important role on the social network scene.
Old school thinking would have you hiring a photographer for a couple of hours, and your whole team posing outside for a photo or two.
Then these photos being uploaded to the website or used as part of a design, and that’s it for a few more years. That method of using images on a website, just doesn’t cut the mustard any more!
You need to be more dynamic and consistent in your image gathering processes, plus be respectful to laws within your country relating to the taking of images and the content within the images.
So what exactly should you be taking photos of?
If you were a builder, then an obvious start is your tools, work in progress, completed work, team members on-site and staff at the HQ. If a florist then obviously the shop front, flowers being prepared, flowers presented for different occasions, a flower van and staff.
With the right legal permissions with regular photos being taken, you will easily build up an impressive archive of photographs that can be used in a design or elsewhere on a website.
The fact is with digital technology you can take hundreds of photos, and if half or less turn out to be low quality then just delete those.
To improve the quality you need to consider factors such as good light, and using a tripod to keep the camera steady. Sure the results won’t be as good as a professional photographer, with an expensive camera and equipment, but the reality is you need to generate images to use online.
Then some of these images could make their way to your web designer and developer to include in your website theme.
You could use the images within your pages and posts. Plus use other images for social network use.
