The GOOD

South Africa - The Rainbow Nation
Why the ‘Rainbow Nation’………?Phrase coined by Archbishop Desmond Tutu on the announcement of a transition to democracy in South Africa, followed by:-
“We have triumphed in the effort to implant hope in the breasts of the millions of our people. We enter into a covenant that we shall build the society in which all South Africans, both black and white, will be able to walk tall, without any fear in their hearts, assured of their inalienable right to human dignity - a rainbow nation at peace with itself and the world.Let freedom reign.
The sun shall never set on so glorious a human achievement!
God bless Africa!” Statement by Nelson Mandela at his Inauguration as President, (10 May 1994)
‘Rainbows’ & DSM: Similarities……..?• 7 Varying Colours

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly ……..
…….. socially-speaking, in South Africa.
But, in Relation to DSM ………….?
The ‘Good’ become the ‘Bad’ ……..
The ‘Bad’ become the ‘UGLY’ ……
The ‘Ugly’ become the ‘Good’ …..!
……… from a DSM-perspective?
The ‘Ugly’ = Revenue!!!
The Result ………………….•Rolling black-outs in 2008!
•3 declared Electricity Emergency warnings in last 3 weeks.
•National Load-shedding on 6 March 2014!
South Africa’s dilemma ???•Short-term (Cosmetic) or longer-term (IDM) solution/s…………?
Some of the Current Solutions• 1 million SWH programme, funded by the government.
• Comprehensive utility-based and tariff-fundedIDM programme.
• 60 million ‘free’ CFL & LED give-away,funded through IDM.
• Introduction of 2 Energy Efficiency Tax Incentivesfor Industrial and Commercial customers.
