Azure Storage Limitations: The Problem

• One or more 1TB disks (page blobs) can be attached to Virtual Machines created in Microsoft Azure.

• Each disk is set at 1023GB.

• The maximum number of disks that can be attached to a single VM depends on the Azure machine size. Typical Azure VMs support a maximum of 8 or 16 disks, although a few of the more pricey machines can support 32TB or 64TB per VM.

Page 15: StoneFly Scale Out Cloud Storage for Veeam in Microsoft Azure

• Windows and Linux operating systems can be configured to span or stripe these disks to create a single 16TB volume. However, even though this volume can store up to 16TB of data, it cannot store any individual files larger than 1TB because of the Azure page blobs in the back end.

• The 1TB file size limit is a critical problem for anyone trying to use Veeam Cloud Connect to upload a Veeam backup file to a backup repository in Microsoft Azure for disaster recovery.

Azure Storage Limitations: The Problem

Page 16: StoneFly Scale Out Cloud Storage for Veeam in Microsoft Azure

StoneFly's Scale Out NAS Cloud Drive for Microsoft Azure not only solves the 1TB file size limitation, but also allows the user to "scale out" one or more volumes across multiple Azure VMs to create a nearly unlimited amount of storage for your Veeam backups.

• StoneFly Cloud Storage with Scale Out NAS allows you to "scale out" as your business grows by adding nodes without losing performance and bypassing any storage capacity size constraints that Azure may have. • With the StoneFly Cloud Storage with Scale Out you

can expand one or more volumes across multiple StoneFly Cloud Drives and Azure blobs using no metadata and a single namespace.

Page 21: StoneFly Scale Out Cloud Storage for Veeam in Microsoft Azure

• Performance increases as new StoneFly Cloud Drive nodes are added. • Each time the StoneFly Cloud Drive is scaled out, it

adds more capacity, more throughput, and more concurrency. • Installation, management and scaling is simple to

achieve at any size.

What is Scale Out NAS?

• Scale Out NAS is a distributed file system that can scale to several petabytes all while handling thousands of clients. • It functions as a distributed data overlay, polling

together storage building blocks over TCP/IP, aggregating disk resources and managing data in a single global namespace.• The unified platform handles blocks, files, objects and

big data.

Page 23: StoneFly Scale Out Cloud Storage for Veeam in Microsoft Azure

Scale Out NAS solves enterprise storage requirements, including:• Enterprise-wide file sharing with a single access point

across data storage locations.• Nearline storage for infrequently accessed data that

needs to be online. • Rich media (audio and video) content distribution

with petabyte-scale storage and high-read performance requirements.

Page 24: StoneFly Scale Out Cloud Storage for Veeam in Microsoft Azure

Scale Out NAS solves enterprise storage requirements, including:• High-performance storage for bandwidth-intensive

applications like weather prediction and oil and gas exploration. • Centralized storage-as-a-service to enterprise

applications. • Backup target and archive for off-site data protection.

The machine size selected must be A3 or higher (4 Cores + 7GB Memory). The number of data disks will depend on your total space requirements. Each Azure data disk has a maximum size of 1023GB. An A3 Standard VM supports up to 8 Azure data disks for a maximum of 8TB per machine. An A4 Standard VM supports up to 16 Azure data disks for a maximum of 16TB per machine. The machine size can be changed later if needed.
