Solar energyWhat is solar energy?

Solar energy means energy from the sun. Although the sun is 150 million kilometers away from the Earth, it is amazingly powerful. We can capture some of the sun’s energy and use it to heat buildings, provide light and generate electricity.

Page 3: Solar

Advantages of solar energy

• It is renewable energy. The sun gives out ‘free’ power all the time.

• It is silent, causes no pollution and does not harm wildlife.

• It provides energy where it is used, so there is no need for large cables.

• It is useful in remote places, and works on a small or large scale.

Page 4: Solar

Possible disadvantages

• Solar power does not work at night.

• At the moment, PV cells are expensive (but getting cheaper).

Experiment with solar energy

1. Your teacher will help you set up a solar collector. Rocord the temperature of the water before the test.

2. Make sure the box lid is well covered with clingfilm ( no gaps)

3. Leave the box outside in sunny place for 1 or 2 hours

4. Measure the temperature of water

5. Write down what happened and explain why ?

Page 6: Solar

Conclusions: • Temperature of water

contained in a small polythene bag (tied tightly) increases.Solar energy heats the water.Higher temperature of water was observed in a paper box inlaid with a black paper. Water placed in a box inlaid with a white paper heats slower.

3. PV cells can produce energy as a result of :

a) Photosynthesis phenomenon.

b) Dissociation phenomenon.

c) Photovoltaic phenomenon.

Page 12: Solar

Check your answer.

a) False, Photosynthesis is a metabolic pathway that converts carbon dioxide into organic compounds with the energy from sunlight

b) False, Dissociation is a general process in which ionic compounds separate or split into smaller molecules

c) True, Photovoltaic processes in solar cells for energy by converting sunlight directly into electricity.
