As communications and IT merge to create ICT, cloud computing is becoming a key strategic tool that allows service providers and enterprises to compete more efficiently and effectively. The advantages of cloud computing will only be fully realized, however, when the cloud computing solution supports all aspects of ICT, is fully open to provide future flexibility and is offered as a complete end-to-end solution.

1 Overview

Cloud computing allows IT organizations and service providers to offer new consumption and delivery models for IT services. First developed for Internet-delivered services, cloud computing uses virtualized resources to allow services to be dynamically allocated and scaled based on the user’s actual requirements. This dynamic provisioning can also be used to create pay-as-you-use models for IT services, dramatically reducing costs and improving business flexibility.

Key advantages of cloud computing include:

••Promotes resource reuse and allows energy conservation and pollution reduction.••Improves working efficiency and reduces operation and maintenance costs.••Enhances information monitoring and management, ensures data security.••Fast deployment improves customer satisfaction.

2 Driving Forces of Cloud Computing

Considerable unstructured data has emerged due to popularity of Web 2.0 and high-definition digital cameras, and higher requirements for 3Dimages, which has resulted in information explosion.

Information explosion and Web 2.0 application are the two strong driving forces of the cloud computing development.

2.1 Driving force: Information ExplosionTotal data collected in Library of Congress of US covers 57 million

scripts, 29 million books and magazines, and 12 million images. The amount of the global data generated in 2006 is 161 EB. If the data

is printed on paper, the thickness is ten times the distance from the Earth to theSun.

The amount of the global data generated in 2007 is 280 EB. That is, each person generates an average of 45 GB data.

Page 7: Single cloud

The amount of the global data generated in 2008 is 540 EB. That is, the data generated every day is 100 times the amount of the data collected bythe Library of Congress of US in 200 years.

The amount of the global data generated in 2009 is 800 EB. If the data is recorded on DVDs, the thickness of the total overlaid DVDs is the distancefrom the Earth to the Sun.

IDC predicts that the amount of the global data in 2020 will reach 35 ZB, which will be 30 times the amount of the data generated in 2009.

To process and store the rapidly increasing data, enterprises need to increase the size and complexity of their data centers. However, some problems, such as resource shortage, high power consumption, low-efficient operation and management, have become more serious and thereby hinderthe enterprise development. Therefore, improving efficiency of operation and management and enhancing servicecreation capability have become major challenges to enterprises.

2.2 Driving Force: Web 2.0Since the introduction of Web 2.0, the role of a user has changed from

pure data consumer to information contributor. In addition, Web 2.0 has made the rich Internet application (RIA) a development trend of the network application. After the introduction of Web 2.0, people have changed their perception about software and software application modes. Change of the computing mode will bring many challenges such as:••How to acquire considerable storage and computing resources••How to operate services economically on the Internet••How to make the Internet more agile and flexible••How to enable enterprises and users to easily enjoy more newServices

3 Huawei Cloud Computing Strategy

Huawei cloud computing strategy includes the following three parts:••Developing SingleCLOUD platform: Construct a large platform to ensure resource sharing, energy saving, and environmental protection.••Migrating telecom to cloud: Promote cloud application to services and applications to speed up informatization.Huawei will provide and deployvarious ICT services in a uniform mode; implement resource sharing to enhance working efficiency and reduce costs.••Building win-win ecosystem: Feature openness and cooperation attitudes that help to achieve a win-win result. Huawei will cooperate withpartners to promote digitization of information and intelligence, thereby achieving a win-win result.

4 Huawei Cloud Computing Solution-SingleCLOUDRapid Internet development has greatly promoted digitization of

information and changed the application and management model of IT resources.

The independent and distributed resources will be gradually changed to service resources with data centers as the bearer platform. Enterprises canlease high-efficiency and professional IT resources and value-added services from the data center. This helps enterprises to spend more time on theirservice creation and development.

Huawei can provide E2E cloud solutions, including a series of facilities, cloud hardware platform, cloud platform management software andapplications based on the platform. Huawei can also provides professional service and security management to help operator to simplify operationmanagement and enhance the user experiment.

The cloud data center solution covers core components of the cloud computing, including computing server, storage server, networking equipment and matching facilities. This can provide one-stop service and steady operation management condition, help operator to reduce OPEX.

The cloud data center solution implements intelligent scheduling and management of IT resources. This improves resource reutilization and reduces mistake due to automatic operation of servers, storage and network. By applying this solution, enterprises can purchase fewer hardware and software, and perform automatic management to reduce workload of the system management engineers.

This helps enterprises to reduce more costs on IT resource purchase, operation and maintenance.

4.2 ICT Oriented Application

With the emergence of cloud computing, customer's network assets (basic network assets, service network assets, cloud computing infrastructure, and user assets) have become the vital factors for driving competitive edge. The cloud computing has great actual and potential value, but it still need to be provided with a sound commercial mode for its successful commercial use.

5 Cloud Computing Applications

Based on deep understanding of customer’s requirements, Huawei has adopted an integrated approach with full synergy in Cloud-Network/Pipe-Terminal layers as the driving force behind the cloud computing strategy. This helps to replace the vertical application system with an optimized new information service structure featuring cloud application, IP-based network and smart terminal. The new information service structure meets requirements of multiple services by means of uniform cloud computing platform.
