Our approach…

1. It’s about the outcomes, not the technology.

2. We use a very broad definition of social media.

We use the term “social media” to describe any kind of tool that you canuse for sharing what you know, including (but not limited to): blogs, photosharing, video sharing, social networks, mobile phone applications, texting, digital TV services, wikis, gaming and collaboration tools.

3. Our guidelines are open & available online.

We believe in sharing…

Sometimes ‘blue whale’ is the right answer…

Have a different kind of conversation with people.

Q. How many ways are there to start a conversation?

A. Lots.

Pink hair… this man may sue us :-)

Red noses and red lights

Don’t be afraid to:

• add a little colour

• be a human being

• say sorry

• say thank you

• just talk

Page 15: Shared Spaces - Using all kinds of technology to connect communities

What we learned this Winter:

• some new (unrepeatable) words

• patience is a virtue

• it snows on Wednesdays

• how to do the bin hokey cokey

• you can’t compete with Elvis

• we’re really looking forward to Spring

Page 16: Shared Spaces - Using all kinds of technology to connect communities

What we learned last Summer:

• people love to share• if you wait for it, you’ve already missed it• we can only tell the story between us

Getting started can sometimes be a bit daunting…

Page 56: Shared Spaces - Using all kinds of technology to connect communities

But together we can create a space in which things grow –plants, conversations or ideas.

Page 57: Shared Spaces - Using all kinds of technology to connect communities

Social media isn’t Facebook

in the same way that

food isn’t McDonald’s

Page 58: Shared Spaces - Using all kinds of technology to connect communities

We grow our own technology

in the same way that

we grow our own jam

and we recommend it.

Page 59: Shared Spaces - Using all kinds of technology to connect communities

This is really what we grow. Relationships.

Our top tips

Start with what you already haveFind out what people are interested in, what they can do, what they want to say. Don’t miss the opportunities to talk.

Use all sorts of technologyA spade used to dig a community allotment is a kind of technology, and so is a printed leaflet and a text message.

Grow some shared spacesCreate places where people have a reason to get together. Community web sites are shared spaces, just like parks.

Everything informs everything elseWorking in physical spaces and online spaces together can make more than the sum of the parts. Allow things to mingle.

Page 61: Shared Spaces - Using all kinds of technology to connect communities

A few things to bear in mind…

OutcomesWhat do you want to achieve?

ContentCreate or facilitate relevant and engaging content.Have useful links at the ready.Make sure people can find it – wherever they want it.Put things in a format that can be reused – encourage it.Help others to share their content – be generous.

SupportDo you have the skills and confidence?Do you have the right tools?Do you have the time between you to be responsive? What skills and experience do you already have?
