Comms (4): results

• Good reviews

• Wide visibility

• Comms matters (they understood)

• Good backstopping? Certainly good enough for a career move!

Page 10: RiPPLE project communication and M&E

Comms (5): challenges

• Turnover... to our neighbours• Promoting outputs• Coordinating Comms & research

Page 11: RiPPLE project communication and M&E

Comms (6): Good ideas & lessons learnt• Thank you • Early strategic birds• The team rocks and is a rock• RiPPLE look and feel, pubs• Intranet & bulletin• Wiki’ed up• Having the coordinator in the

Monitoring (and learning)

Page 13: RiPPLE project communication and M&E

M&E: context

• A logframe

• No M&E

• Starting the works (1 year later!)

• The : : accountability & learning

Page 14: RiPPLE project communication and M&E

M&E (2): Objectives

• Monitor– LPAs– Research– Capacity– Comms

• Outputs / Outcomes (Impact)

• M & E go their way, so does R

Defined as OVIs/ examples MoVOutputs: Outputs are the tangible deliverables

(products or services) that programme activities provide directly, based on inputs (time and money).

Case studies and papers written, website published, networks established, training courses provided etc.

Measured through Logframe.

Outcomes Outcomes are understood as intermediate results from the activities that are beyond the direct control of the programme. In RiPPLE they are related to the three strategic objectives of the programme.

Changes in policy and practice, increasing cooperative attitudes between practitioners, improved transparency in financing flows to the sector.

Measured through additional tools such as outcome mapping, network analysis etc.

Impacts Impacts are understood as the indirect and longer-term results related to the overall goal of the programme.

Increased WASH coverage, and WASH facilities implemented are sustainable and affect the living conditions of the poor in the long run.

Not measured by RiPPLE.

• From logical to monitoring framework

• Methods• Data collection• Compilation

• Mid-term review & evaluation

Page 16: RiPPLE project communication and M&E

M&E (4): results

• First report June 09• Good tools for LPA facilitators • Narrative power• Evidence-based

recommendations (YES)• Capacity built

Page 17: RiPPLE project communication and M&E

M&E (5): challenges

• Turnover• Lack of support / interest

in M&E?• Critical thinking culture?• It takes 2 to tango and a lot

more to monitor

Page 18: RiPPLE project communication and M&E

M&E (6): Good ideas & lessons learnt

• The team again• OM: Overly manageable• The method mix: Pick and choose• Ownership of M&E?• Coordination with director and

office manager;• Narratives / stories of change • The soft effect of process doc
