2. Reported Speech? Imagine this situation: You are walking in the mall and out of the blue you bump into your friend, Zee. You ask Zee that you dont see her for some time and Zee says, Im busy because Im moving to New Zealand. You say, When will it be? She says, In three weeks. And both of you say good bye. 3. When you get out from the mall, you meet Raj, the friend of yours and Zees. Then you tell Raj about Zee. You say, Raj, do you know about Zee? Raj says, No. What happened? You respond, Zee TOLD me (that) she WAS MOVING to New Zealand. Raj is surprised and asks, When? You say, She SAID she WOULD LEAVE in three weeks. 4. From the situation above, we learned that whenever we pass news or words to other(s), we use form of grammar called Reported Speech, or known as Indirect Speech. INIDIRECT SPEECH can happen if you have DIRECT SPEECH. The sign of DIRECT SPEECH is .. Reported speech changes the DIRECT SPEECH into INDIRECT SPEECH, which the sign isnt used. 5. Besides that, INDIRECT SPEECH also transforms the tenses: DIRECT SPEECH INDIRECT SPEECH present past past past perfect perfect Past perfect DIRECT INDIRECT can could will would 6. Lets try this DIRECT SPEECH I said, Im not happy at work. (I told her ) They said: We go to the park every Sunday. (They told us ) John said, I walked home yesterday. (John informed me) He said, Jane will be late. (He said .) Mom said, I can pick you up. (Mom told me ..) INDIRECT SPEECH I told her (that) I wasnt happy at work. They told us (that) they went to the park every Sunday. John informed me (that) he had walked home a day before. He said (that) Jane would be late Mom told me (that) she could pick me up. 7. Notes: There are some things you have to be careful when you transform DIRECT SPEECH to INDIRECT SPEECH: Pronouns John said, I walked home yesterday. John informed me (that) he had walked home a day before. I transform into he because were talking about John you said about himself. Time markers yesterday a day before 8. Type of sentences Is Reported Speech not only used for affirmative and negative forms, but also for question form and imperative form. For question forms, we reckon two types: 1. Questions with Y/N answers 2. Questions with open ended answers 9. Y/N Answers if, whether Are you Lili? A stranger asked me. A stranger asked me IF I was Lili. Do you have time? She asked me. She asked me WHETHER I had time. Open-ended Answer When will you leave? He asked Tasha. He asked Tasha when she would leave. Where did you put the camera? Dad asked my brother.
