● Red Hat, Inc. is an American multinational software company that provides open-source software products. It has large extent with its enterprise operating system Red Hat Enterprise Linux and JBoss.

● It creates, maintains and contributes to many free software projects and also acquired several proprietary software packages and released their source code mostly under the GNU GPL . As of June 2013 , Red Hat is the largest corporate contributor to Linux.

HISTORY OF “Red Hat Inc.”

● In 1993 - Bob Young created a business of Linux and Unix software accessories.

● In 1994 - Marc Ewing created his own Linux distribution , which he named Red Hat Linux.

● Ewing released the software in October , 1993 and it became known as the Halloween release. Young served as Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

● Red Hat went public on August 11, 1999, achieving the eighth-biggest first-day gain in the history of Wall Street.

● In February 2000 - InfoWorld awarded Red Hat its fourth consecutive “Operating System Product of the Year“ award for Red Hat Linux 6.1.

● Red Hat introduced Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and Dell, IBM,HP and Oracle Corporation announced their support of the platform.

● In December 2005 - CIO Insight magazine honored Red Hat as ranked #1 in “Vendor Value Survey” for two years in row.

● Red Hat acquired open-source middleware provider JBoss on June 5, 2006 and it became part of Red Hat.

● On March 15, 2007 - Red Hat released Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and also involved expansion into new technologies such as software virtualization and technology cloud offerings.

● Red Hat became the first one-billion dollar open source company in its fiscal year 2012, reaching $1.13 billion in annual revenue.

● Red Hat sponsors the Fedora Project , a community-supported open-source project that aims to promote the rapid progress of free and open-source software and content.

● In 2007 Red Hat announced that it had reached an agreement with some free software and open source (FOSS) companies that allowed it to make a distribution portal called Red Hat Exchange, reselling FOSS software with the original branding intact.

● Red Hat operates OpenShift, a cloud computing platform as a service, supporting applications written in Node.js, PHP, Perl, Python, Ruby, and JavaEE.

• Research and development expense consists primarily of personnel and related costs for development of software technologies and systems management offerings. Research and development expense increased by 33.6% or $32.8 million to $130.2 million for the year ended February 28, 2009 from $97.4 million for the year ended February 29, 2008.

• Red Hat, among the world's leading open source solutions provider announced the setting up of it's largest engineering facility outside North America in Pune ,May 7, 2012. The company also launched another 'Engineering Center of Excellence' in Bangalore, reiterating its commitment to the Asia-Pacific region.
