IN T E N T A N D OV E R V I E W

A Rapid Response System (RRS) is an organized structure of administrative, clinical, andquality improvement functions whose intent is to prevent harm and death in patientsdemonstrating physiologic deterioration in the hospital. The most widely recognizedcomponent is the response (or efferent) arm commonly called a Medical EmergencyTeam (MET) or Rapid Response Team (RRT). They are a preplanned group of health carepractitioners who respond to crises. The team may be the same as or different from thehospital’s “code” team, but they have a critical difference: they respond prior to an arrestin an attempt to prevent the arrest from occurring. MET and RRT are rapidly gainingacceptance in the U.S., Australia, and Europe.

This year’s course returns to its 2-day format to accommodate a higher efficiencylearning experience. There are workshops, pro-con debates, tutorials, and of course thehighly successful panel discussions utilized last year. Once again, participants are invitedto submit abstracts and present posters if accepted (see “Abstracts” on page 23 ).Faculty will formally visit every poster to foster collaboration.

This course is designed for patient safety officers, hospitalists and hospital based physicians,critical care medicine physicians, critical care and general ward nursing staff, hospitaladministrators, nursing directors, respiratory care directors, and finally resuscitation andclinical outcomes researchers as well as other health care professionals.

The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is accredited by the AccreditationCouncil for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical educationfor physicians.

The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine designates this educational activityfor a maximum of 13.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claimcredit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
