Terms to Understand

• Transliteration: a mapping from one system of writing into another, word by word. Transliteration attempts to be exact, so that an informed reader should be able to reconstruct the original spelling of unknown transliterated words.

• Eg. Transliteration of Hindi:आप कैसे हैं ? Will beEng: Aap Kaise Hain ? And not How are you?

Difference between Translation and Transliteration

• transliteration should not be confused with translation, which involves a change in language while preserving meaning. Transliteration performs a mapping from one alphabet into another.

Tips for translation

• At times you will need to change the correct grammar in English to suit the translated sentences.

• At times when Google Translate fails to provide a good translation, then depend on your own language skills and use Google Transliteration services to get a particular letter in Hindi. This too can be easily copied and pasted next to the required text.

Procedure for Translation1. Select appropriate material for translation. In this case,

we will try to translate an pamphlet to Hindi.2. Open a ‘Rough File’ document on Microsoft Word

(make sure your version of word document supports the hindi script).

3. Open a file on Microsoft Publisher - in this case a banner template. (it need not be a Publisher file – each document for translation will require an appropriate microsoft application eg.word,powerpoint etc depending on the end use).

4. Read the English document to understand what you would like to convey. You may want to change certain terms used internationally to Indian context:

Eg. Pamphlets published in USA will speak of ‘health care providers’ but what you generally find in India is a ‘doctor’s clinic’.

8.Type out the sentence you’d like to translate in English in the box provided.

9.Select ‘English’ to ‘Hindi’ from the drop down box. Then hit the Translate key. The translated text will appear on the screen.

Procedure ctd..10.Select the hindi text provided by Google, then

select the ‘copy’ command from the Edit Menu on your screen, go to your ‘Rough’ file on Word and select ‘copy’. This will copy the text provided by Google on your Word file.

In this way, full paragraphs can be copied using Google translation.

You will need to check if text is correct in grammar at this point. In case Google translate has provided a text which is incorrect, you could use Google Transliteration at this point…..

To Publish the brochure on your blog

Blog supports image files. Therefore, you will need to convert .pub files to .jpeg files. You will do this by selecting ‘Save As’ command under the ‘File’ Menu. Select JPEG files and hit OK.
