Laser Scanning - Definition

• 3D Laser Scanning is a means of rapidly collecting detailed and accurate as-built data.

• A 3D Laser Scanner emits a laser beam that “sweeps across” a target object gathering millions of measurements.

• This data can be viewed, navigated and analyzed much like a 3D model created in a traditional CAD system.

Why does Mortenson Laser Scan???

Scanning is the most time effective way of capturing a three –

dimensional moment of existing objects and structures.

Integrated Work Plan

• Plan the work

• Determine how many setups are required

• Determine with the client what deliverable is required (Point Cloud / Revit model / Navisworks model)

• Review plan with the design team

• WORK THE PLAN!

Page 13: Practical Scanning Uses for Construction Applications by Tim Schubert

Estimate Example

• IWP determines how much time will be required to complete scan project.

•Communication tool for scheduling craft workers and ordering equipment from the yard

•Proper planning for travel and gives the internal client idea of what travel will cost

•Review the estimate with team before approval

What is the VALUE added to the project???

Mortensen staff worked with

the design and construction

team to verify pipe and

conduit routing in the

model prior to construction,

which saved the project both

time and money. The

accuracy of their model

was very good and the

installation went well and

without issues.
