Challenges on the road to development A functioning and well maintained road infrastructure is imperative for any country that wishes to develop and grow. Africa is no exception. Vast areas of Africa have poor or non-existent roads, which hampers the social and eco-nomic development of African citizens. Other roads are in a state of disrepair, and the resulting potholes, accidents and unnecessary road reconstruction eat into the pockets of government and tax payers alike. “Good Economies Don‟t Build Good Roads Good Roads Build Good Economies” Towards a new approach Polysoil D150 is a revolutionary new tool in the transport industry‟s arsenal. Research and developed specifically to ensure optimum strength, flexibility and endurance, Polysoil D150 provides a cost effective way to ensure long lasting, high-performance road base. Unlike traditional road construction methods—which necessitate the use of aggregates, including lime and cement—Polysoil D150 can be applied direct into the in-situ soil sur-face. The result is performance that exceeds that of traditional construction methods, but in a fraction of the time. Rigorous testing The technologies that have qualified Polysoil D150 to be a world-leading product have been meticulously researched and tested over an extreme range of in-situ soil types. Boundaries are continuously challenged, and applications in adverse conditions are our specialty. Polysoil D150 adheres to a strict code of analytical regimes set by recognized testing fa-cilities across the globe, including Civilab, Simlab, and Coffey International. The technology behind Polysoil D150

Co-polymer binding agent Polysoil D150 is a co-polymer binding agent in liquid form. A polymer is a string of repeat-ing and interlinking monomers. When Polysoil D150 is applied to in-situ soil, aggregates or other porous base materials, it encapsulates and binds the material together. The product therefor transforms the ex-isting road material into a durable and flexible base. Vehicles can drive on this base di-rectly, or a clear seal, bitumen or tar seal can be applied on the top of the base to form a wearing surface. No more foreign aggregates The liquid nature of Polysoil D150 provides optimum penetration and bonds a broad range of fine and granular materials ranging from G1 to G10. Since Polysoil D150 can be applied directly to in-situ soil, the need to introduce quarried materials is drastically re-duced, and in most cases non-existent. No more fears of over compaction When the road surface is compacted, the polymer molecules are locked into a cross-linked molecular structure. Increased compaction leads to increased strength, since Polysoil D150 migrates down-wards to create a sturdy base layer. For example, if a road is ripped to 150mm, the down-ward migration of Polysoil D150 ensures a base course of 300mm. This base layer is ecologically sound and will not leach when cured. The challenges and risks associated with the over-compaction of traditional cement roads are therefore a thing of the past. Applications Polysoil D150 can be applied as a single product to private roads, or it can be used to create a stable base layer in preparation for a seal in the construction of public roads. It can also be used for high intensity roads and specialized pavement such as aircraft run-ways. In addition, Polysoil D150 can be used successfully in the recycling of roads. A fraction of the road base (including the seal) is milled into smaller particles and is mixed with Poly-soil D150. The material is then relaid as a new base, providing a durable road surface.

Technical performance

Challenges on the road to development Before applying Polysoil D150, soil samples from the site are mixed with the product in our laboratories. The sample of the actual road mix is analysed and tested for plasticity, density, grading, UCS and CBR. This testing process allows the identification of the opti-mum mixture and results. Polysoil D150 is supplied in 1,000-litre containers that can easily be handled on site. A 1km section of road 6m wide and ripped to 150mm requires approximately 9,000 litres of Polysoil D150 Polysoil D150 will remain active for 7 Days after final compaction should further levelling or construction be required. The product has a 2 year shelf life when stored at 22 deg. C out of direct sunlight

Step 1: Grader on dirt ripping the surface. Step 2: Grader on dirt road using blade to break clods and remove rocks etc and shape.

Step 3: A bowser with horizontal spray attachment to spray Polysoil D150. (brown liquid)

Step 4: Use the grader blade to mix the product into soil.

Step 5: Add water to adjust OMC and using the grader blade mix again.

Step 6: Compact with vibrating smooth roller (min 14 tons) The road is now ready to use or seal when required.

Project performance

Increased Speed Polysoil D150 can be applied direct to in-situ soil. This less complex preparation process, together with the fact that aggregates are not necessary, significantly reduces the time to construct and use roads. In the traditional cement-based road construction process, cement stabilisation requires a curing process of seven to 21 days. The process to construct a 1km section of road 6m wide using the Polysoil D150 method - from ripping the surface through to finishing with a seal (where necessary) - can take as little as 5 days depending on the location, condi-tions and type of seal.

Decreased Cost The Polysoil D150 method can result in cost savings between 30% and 50% compared to traditional road construction methods. Aggregates do not need to be purchased, and ex-isting soil and other marginal materials can be used. Due to the strength and flexibility that Polysoil D150 adds to the surface, the need for long term maintenance is also reduced. The polymer binding process in Polysoil D150 means that corrugation and potholes are a thing of the past. Harnessed capability Polysoil D150 substantially reduces the capital investment needed in equipment. Existing machinery can be used more effectively, and machines can move quickly from one pro-ject to the next due to the shorter road construction process.

Efficient use of resources Polysoil D150 allows for the use of in-situ soil types, and marginal or normally discarded materials. This, together with the fact that aggregates do not have to be quarried and transported, reduces the impact of road construction on the environment. Reduced environmental pollution Polysoil D150 is non-toxic and non-hazardous to humans and the environment. Since Polysoil D150 encapsulates the soil and other materials used in the road construction process - and since further water penetration is not possible - there is no risk of leaching into the waterways and the surrounding environment. Positive impact on society and the economy Since road surface constructed with Polysoil D150 can never be over-compacted, it can be opened to traffic immediately after compaction. Depending on conditions and the equipment used, up to 2kms of road (6m wide) can be opened to traffic per day. This minimises the need for lengthy detours and traffic disruptions, meaning that the im-pact of road construction on the economy, and on citizens‟ access to basic services, is reduced.

Design with the environment

Natural appeal, purpose driven ‘dirt’ roads In South Africa much of our naturally occurring in-situ materials are conducive to creating a stable road base with the use of Polysoil D150. This means that we can now obtain a structure that is totally in tune with the environment and will have little or no added detriment to the most sensitive ecologies. Africa prides itself with its natural heritage and diversity of unique natural beauty, this plays a large role in the sustainability of our economy. The attraction of tourists and natu-ralists seeking solace in these environments in turn ensures the protection of our para-dise. Earth Ethix believes our paradise need not become a parking lot, so what better way to ensure access sensitive to these environments with the use of Polysoil D150. The application of a tar wearing course is no longer necessary on pavement with a maxi-mum speed limitation of 80km / hour for natural gravel roads. The strength and durability of Polysoil D150 together with its extreme hydrophobic nature ensures a base strong enough to withstand wear and tear from continuous use as well as effects of climatic and environmental instabilities. A surface preparation of POLYSEAL is applied to the compacted surface after a minimum curing period of 2 to 3 days dependant on weather conditions, there after a maintenance regime is adhered to with the re-application of POLYSEAL from time to time. This preventative care of the road surface ensures an economic life span which will out-perform any other compacted natural „dirt‟ road. The use of in-situ soil ensures the aesthetic appearance will take on the natural colour of the surrounding soil type and with the correct design for water drainage the surface will remain dust free. Ideal for dust suppression and the preservation of natural flora along access routes and the prevention of crop damage due to dust prevalence. The natural surface minimises the effect on the natural migration habits of indigenous fauna Polysoil D150 drastically improves stopping distances on gravel roads and reduces vehi-cle wear. Treated surfaces will not corrugate or pothole.
