E-Validation project 2013
Presented by Steve McMahon & Jaci Ganendran
Certificate 3 in Engineering Fabrication Trade
CIT proposes to develop a process to independently validate assessment tools and student assessment outcomes for apprentices in the Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade (MEM30305) using a number of eLearning tools (e.g. Moodle, Adobe Connect and EQUELLA). The project will aim to trial a model to effectively engage metal fabrication experts from employers, industry groups and other RTOs across Australia using the eLearning tools to validate the formative and summative assessment tools and outcomes (including those completed through RPL) for seven units of competency (six core and one elective) from the Certificate III in Engineering Fabrication qualification.
Overview of Project
CIT staff members • Jaci Ganendran - Project Manager • Sue Maslen – a/g Centre Director Educational Excellence • Vanessa Tuckfield – Manager eLR Support • Annette Young – Audit & Quality • Samantha Bond – Recognition Services • Evan Street - Teacher Metal Fabrication • Elisabeth McPherson – Centre Director Learning Services • Anita Wesney – Flex ed, Educational Excellence Members outside of CIT • Jerrod Davies – Server Racks Australia • Steve Honan - HDM Metal Fabrication • Trevor Marshall - ACT Stainless Steel

Project Team
Here are the 6 core units that represent our project and underpin the 1 elective UOC – Use Hand Tools
• Apply principles of occupational health and safety in the work environment
• Organise and Communicate Information • Plan to undertake a routine task • Apply quality systems • Apply Quality Procedures • Work with others in a manufacturing, engineering or related
environment • Use Hand Tools - elective

Industry feedback and suggestions To date we have piloted this with 5 members of the pilot group and have received some constructive feedback on how they perceive the validation process should work.
Some key points that have been part of the discussion to date:
Ensure that the wording is text that is relevant to industry and not structured to the
VET environment.
Keep the flow of the links to evidence in line with the validation questions
What is the difference between assessment work and assessment task?
This process has given Industry & Tafe a better insight to the skills and knowledge that is currently required to be successful in the engineering environment.
The amount of time it will take to validate a unit of competency
