14. Case Study Rapidcool Reducing energy consumption in
commercial chillers, refrigerators and freezers by up to 75%
Chilled food and drink dispensers are convenient and universal. The
problem is that maintaining a continuous chilled temperature is
highly demanding on energy. With funding of 1.2m secured by Pera
Technology through the EU FP7 programme, the Rapidcool project
developed a flexible, modular cooling apparatus that can chill
drinks cans and bottles from an ambient 20C to 4-6C using less than
25-50kJ of energy. The cooling chamber is designed as a standalone
cooling unit and could potentially replace traditional drinks-only
open-cabinet fridges. Early results are excellent. The Rapidcool
system can save up to 75% of the energy currently consumed by a
conventional vending machine or display cabinet, which equates to
cost savings of around 250 per machine per year.
15. Case Study CompAir New manufacturing process for the
production of thermoplastic composite structural aircraft
components. The Compair project was about the development of a
processing technology to manufacture structural components of
complex geometry using high performance thermoplastics. This
involved the creation of preforms which are over-moulded by
engineering thermoplastics. The ultimate benefit is that such
components enable the aircraft industry to reduce its environmental
impact through weight saving and hence lower fuel consumption. The
other advantages of the current traditional carbon fibre composite
manufacturing technology is that the new thermoplastic components
are easily recyclable and the hand lay-up processes is less labour
intensive. Pera Technology were a central research partner for the
development of the new manufacturing process for the carbon fibre
preforms and the advanced composites.
