PADLR and Edutella

Edutella is a p2p framework for exchange of metadata It builds on top of the JXTA (Sun) project We want the following services (at least)

Query Mapping Replication

Page 3: PADRL Presentation 2001-11-03

Basic infrastructure workwithin the KMR group

The first step is designing and implementing the query service, so far we have:

Categorized queries into levels of expressibility Agreed on a schema for expressing and exchanging

queries (done mainly together with people in KBS). Built a java-API for manipulation of queries. Built a parser and serializer against this API

Basic infrastructure workwithin the KMR group

We're currently working on: Continuing developing and testing the schema and API Writing utility functions to simplify translations to other

query representations such as SQL and AmosQL Methods for registration process in hubs. Mapping schemas Continuosly building consensus via keeping a close eye

on parallell development in mailinglists and standardization movements (IMS, IEEE, W3C, ADL). (Bleeding edge)

Higher-level workwithin the KMR group

Graphical query language using Unified Language Modeling (ULM)

Evaluation of the possibilities of Edutella for user-level tools: Conzilla filtering/Portfolios etc.

Portfolio integration (later presentation).

Hard tasks

Agreeing on the query schema turned out to be a hassle (just as in W3C) but we solved it!

Finding common terminology between people within different fields such as database- and AI-research.

Query translations on the higher level queries are rather complex (hard algorithms).

Promoting RDF and Edutella internationally (IMS, LOM, ISO, Dublin Core, and many more). Much momentum behind XML-based solutions.

Promoting meta-data, RDF and Edutella locally.

Modular content archives Uppsala + KMR group

Investigate how to do content design in the humanities.Describe how portfolios should work (a paper).Provide a proof of concept implementation of a portfolio system.Develop methods for using portfolios in curriculum design and course activities.

Portfolio work

We are working right now with design and supervision of the portfolio development

Developing an RDF-binding of the IMS content packaging

Developing an API for IMS CP Making sure IMS Content Packaging is used for storing

metadata and structure Changing the backend representation and access into

RDF format Allowing an edutella peer to access the portfolios

Page 9: PADRL Presentation 2001-11-03

Hard problems

The RDF binding requires international agreement Interpretation of CP information binding Presentation of portfolios in browsers ACLs, consistency, concurrency and distributed access

(WebDav) Defining the limits and possible uses of portfolios
