UNDERSTANDING MidAIRelement, character & behaviour

First thing first: What is MID-AIR?

• Mid-air is one of the elements that makes up the natural environment surrounding us together with Water, Earth and Light.

• Differentiating all these elements apart from another are their characteristic, behavior andcapacity ranging from scientific studied data, researches and even literary poetry.

General Term Definition Speed / Character in Height

Physical Observation Mid Air Architectural Translation

Calm Hardly any air movement 0-1 km/h Sea like a mirror and smoke rises vertically

-Therapeutic space-Column Repetition

Breeze A subtle air movement that can be felt on exposed skin

6-11km/h Small wavelet on water surface but the surface do not break and leaves rustle

-Large open exhibition area -Spacious walkway

Windy A wind blow that abounding in or exposed to the wind or breezesconstantly for a duration of time

20-28km/h Small waves and becoming larger . Dust and small paper raised while small branches begin to move

-suspended walkway that catches the breeze-viewing deck

High wind air moving (sometimes with considerable force) from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure

39-50km/hStrongest on the flat land

Large waves formed and make some spray. Largebranches in motion. Empty plastic garbage tip over. hard to handle umbrella. whistling heard in overhead wire

-High suspended floor with translucent floor treatment-tall towering structure

Hurricane an intense, rotating oceanic weather system that possesses maximum sustained winds

-119 km/hr-This cyclonic circulation becomes weaker with height

High waves and formed streaks of foam. Twigs broken from trees, cars veer on road, large branches break and small trees blown away

-Movable structure -Swaying bridge / linkage-High slides-Gravity defying structure

Challenging human fear of height + youth spirits / sportsMID AIR PHILOSOPHY

Interpreting MidAIR into Architecturephilosophy

MID AIR PHILOSOPHIES

• SUSPENDED / ELEVATED STRUCTURES – CABLE-STAYED STRUCTURE / POST AND TENSION STRUCTURE , MASSIVE CORE STRUCTURE, IN EQUILIBRIUM

• EXPERIENCE OF HEIGHT – FEAR OF HEIGHT - FALL • EXPERIENCE OF JOURNEY – VISUAL PLAY+EMOTION+

CIRCULATION TYPO ( )• INTERACTION HIGH GROUND LOW GROUND• CHALLENGING HUMAN VISUAL PERCEIVED ANGLE• CONNECTIVITY THROUGH MID-AIR TO GROUND.• WIND CATCHMENT LEVEL – FOR APPROPRIATE

ELECTRICITY GENERATED

“FUN”BRIDGE

http://elleswim.net/page/2/

• Zip lining course – suspension bridge – scary + challenging eh? Hahaha let’s try it!

• Proposing glazed steps at certain area –create a GASPING MOMENT! Where people will eventually slow down, take a deep breath, walk carefully, pretend they not see below!! hahaha

MID AIR SENSE OF CHARACTER…

SUCH INNOCENT SOULS ,AS BRAVE AS A SOLDIER – our UTM student?

challenging the norm / outcome fear of height =MID AIR PHILOSOPHY

• http://www.flixya.com/photo/1861362/dangerous-bridge - 500 children, from Maji village in Fugong town, Yunnan province, cross the most dangerous stretch of the NujiangRiver each day

• - A Pu, 5, who was stuck in the middle of the cable for nearly 20 minutes once, told reporters, 'I used to dream of having a bridge, but then I learned that my dream was too expensive.'

MID AIR SENSE OF CHARACTER…

REFLEXOLOGY PATHAn idea for both health and experiences / sensation – surface decoration - MID AIR PHILOSOPHY

MID AIR SENSE OF CHARACTER…

TRAVELLATORFAST FORWARD whenever emergency – washroom? Huge luggage “balik kampong”? Feel sick? Late for submission? = adrenaline rush / moment of “floating forward” - -MID AIR PHILOSOPHY

MID AIR SENSE OF CHARACTER…

INTERACTIVE FLOOR SURFACE?• New invention – future

science

• Technology resembles the university strength & image

• Informative- require less space – anywhere! MID AIR PHILOSOPHY: visual projection can’t be touch but this one react to human movement

MID AIR SENSE OF CHARACTER…

• The Virtual Space in architecture means the use of some technology or method to create an unreal space to increase or reduce the actual space.

MID AIR SENSE OF CHARACTER…

• There are three basic method to create a virtual space.

1. Mirror

2. Painting

3. Opening

METHOD:

THEVIRTUAL

SPACE

Mirror ?

• Mirror can copy the image, it is the most well – know method to create the virtual space. Someone considered it is the gate to the other world.

• Now we have some high –tech things not only copy your image but also can keep it! This is a Iris diaphragm matrix mirror.

Mirror to MID-AIR

• This is a magic show by John Noble, he use the mirror to make him looks floating. The fact is he is stand one the ground

The MidAIR Masterplanmasterplan philosophy & brief

Introduction of Mid Air MasterplanProposal

• Mid Air masterplan proposal circulate around the ideation of human responses towards height to trigger excitement, adrenaline rush and amazement in experiencing the journey from point A to point B.

• Why we resort to Height? Since we are playing with air element, we decided to take it up vertically where senses are triggered rather differently at perceived height difference levels.

• Despite the height manipulation, each individual hubs are designed with a hint of playfulness to maximize energy level of users and give the sense of being elevated.

Issues• High density traffic

– contributing to carbon emission and provoking pollution

• Long-stretch monotonous commuting points for pedestrians

> How to minimize the

effect?

How to solve it through mid air masterplan?

•some areas alreGROUNDDEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL ady have a balanced system / facilities such as sports & recreational space –maintained and improve the circulation that lead to the hub.

•RELOCATION OF EXISTING STRUCTURES several structures were relocated, but it was our intention to minimise ground development (MIDAIR IDEOLOGY AND APPROACH) , so planning wise was to avoid maximum structural relocation.

Structures relocated:•-COLLEGE RUBBISH HOUSE x1 (east)•-COLLEGE DORMITORY UNIT x2 (west)

•Structures replaced – with THE HUB•-ARKED K9/K10•-ARKED CENGAL

PARAMETERS TO THE MASTERPLAN ( INFOs-POWERED CORRIDOR )

a. DEFINING HEIGHT LEVEL

b. VISUAL & CONNECTIVITY

c. PEDESTRIAN & VEHICLE ACCESS

d. CREATING SPACES THAT EVOKE EXCITEMENT & EXPERIENCES

e. NATURE REFERENCES

f. CREATING OTHER MID-AIR POSSIBILITIES

a.DEFINING HEIGHT LEVEL• Gravity pull vs anti-gravity• Fear of height/ death from fall = mid

air experiences/excitement/thrill• Challenging it = create Xgames activities

that suits UTM Youth Spirits?

• Jump fact – layman vsprofessionals/athletes

HIGH+VERTICAL ELEMENTS IN UTM

b.VISUAL & CONNECTIVITY• HIGH + VERTICAL ELEMENTS IN

UTM

• MINARETS = VISIBLE LANDMARK + ECHO TRANSMIT & RECEIVING

• RELATING MID-AIR CORRIDOR TO MOTHER NATURE’S MID AIR REFERENCES

– A CIRCULATION SPINE = ??

• USING HUMAN STEREOSCOPIC VISUAL LIMIT AS A CIRCULATION STRATEGY – KEEP GOING FORWARD TO MINIMISE TRAFFIC CONGESTION

MINARETS =TOWER:CHARACTER - ECHOES OF AZAN

VISIBLE LANDMARK = ECHOLOCATION IN MID AIR (BATS & SEVERAL NOCTURNALS) + LIGHTS DURING NIGHT

COMMUNICATION TOWER = TRANSMIT & RECEIVING WAVELENGTH – SOUNDS VIBRATION THROUGH MID AIR

HIGH GROUND TO LOW GROUND = EFFICIENTCY IN TRANSMITTING – LESS OBSTRUCTION WIDER COVERAGE

c. PEDESTRIAN & VEHICLE ACCESS

ISSUES:

• Lack of parking spaces.

• Need to travel far (even with vehicle ; car etc).

• Bus services..create traffic + environmental problem

• Pedestrian path sometimes hazardous – not maintained & very near to road (safety) not wide enough + no proper shades + exposed to vehicle smog (comfort value).

SOLUTION• Provide additional parking spaces• Introduce central hub = transit

area>>From vehicle-parking-transit-

walking-faculties>>Central hub – attractive programs: -UTM information kiosks +

discussion zones + WiFi facilities-24 hour Fast food & delivery ( McD,

Ayamas etc)-Bookstore ( MPH bookstore,

Kinokuniya etc.)-Other Retails ( Guardian, , basic

Groceries etc.

d. CREATING SPACES THAT EVOKE EXCITEMENT & EXPERIENCES

FEAR OF HEIGHT / FALL = MID-AIR EXCITEMENT!HIGH + ELEVATED ABOVE LANDSCAPE = PERSPECTIVESHIGHER GROUND = HIGHER WIND SPEED

• The hub – 2 floors. 1st = programs 2nd = open landscape/garden• Hanging planter pots + roots growing

• The corridor – Fin designed to rotated at certain time- fixed angular less than 100 deg. (Human Stereoscopic Visual Angle) –forcing them to move forward to enjoy view

- Different stepping : FAST – WALK – GLAZING to create gasping moment whenever the journey is done

• The linkages – points of interval – linked science centre (above 4th floor) to the hubs – ground (parking) – corridor – college zones . Open air + high railings of reinforced glazing to ignites fear of height – the experience/excitement

CONCLUSION : RELATIONSHIPS [FORMULA]

[Space] .[Station]• Space = size + connection +

direction + extension + circulation

• Station = controllable + integration+ interaction

[Space] • Size = height + weight + length

[Height is a main point to show the mid-air]

• Direction = 2D direction + 3D direction

• Radial symmetrical human flow. Gravity? go a way.

• Circulation = consumption + Regeneration

• Regeneration to GBI

[Station] Controllable = control + able

[Mid-air structure is a unstable system need a comprehensive Control ]

Integration = smart + helpful

Interaction = active + efficient
