At the moment we have a «Clean your street» application available for technical services and public areas. Streetlightning, garbage, pot-holes and the likes are reported, and it is used!

Our standard GIS application has been set up with as much Open data as possible (more than 90 choices), which means you really have to know what layer to seek, to have the information found. One disadvantage is that the ownership of data is outside the municipality, so interested people must find the source of info, or we can link to the data.

The standards are set by othersFrom a Scandinavian perspective, there are two good examples from Stockholm and Copenhagen. Both give statistical information, much like Kristiansand, and some also in the same formats, BUT they do make an added value by refining information and making it geographical.Examples:Percentage of local population that voted at last elections. (Copenhagen map)Percentage of population 16-67 years of age, that are one sickness leave. (Stockholm map)

Open data only for the private sector?

We see the value that may be released by freeing up data forthe privat sector, and give ie app-devellopers access to the data for further development. On the other hand, there are vast uses of the data that mayinfluence policy-makers and give them lots of added insightinto matters of local politics by a small re-make of data, andthe way they are presented. This may have an impact in regulatory issues, the school- and kindergarten planning, leisure activity planning and a lot more. This is a democratic issue!

A general lack of information for politicians

What we saw when starting to work with maps/GIS data isthe increased value of visual information and the change ofgeneral beliefs. There are several issues to be investigated and revised ininformation after we have tried to give alternative ways ofpresenting the data. We think there are a lot of advantages for open data in a general sense, BUT there are certainly a lot of dynamiteto feed into local political processes as well.
