The West African country has overtaken South Africa tobecome the continent's largest mobile market with nowmore than 125 million subscribers and a marketpenetration of around 75% in early 2014. The rapidgrowth has led to problems with network congestion andquality of service, prompting the regulatory authority NCCto impose fines and sanctions.

Nigeria is also the most competitive fixed-line market inAfrica, featuring a second national operator (SNO,Globacom) and over 80 other companies licensed toprovide fixed telephony services. The alternative carrierscombined now provide around 85% of all fixedconnections, the majority of which has been implementedusing wireless technologies.
