The load features

• Quadratic load Vs. speed are ingeneral required for the VSDSdesign.

• Speed range must be well definedfrom the beginning – critical speedsmust be avoided – maximumoperating speed and the over-speed(120%) shall be mechanically verified– lower speed shall be compatiblewith motor cooling and bearingsdesign.

• In case of an operational speedmargin (example 110% speed),constant power will be consideredaccording to the rated power of theVSDS. Otherwise, with quadratictorque load, the VSDS should beoversized and rated accordingly(example 133% power).

• Compressor load can be highlyinfluenced by the process (gaspressures/temperatures), so propermargins must be considered.

Detailed Design• Base plates. Motor was designed with a triple base plateand positioning bolts. This reduces service interventiontime for eventual replacement from 7 to 2 days.

• During this phase our Engineering team worked with theEnd User and Engineering firm define redundancies in thepressurization system and identify materials(soundproofing, seals, bolts, etc…) to reduce risk of failure, assisting in cost-benefit analysis to optimize CAPEX

• They also worked with the OEM to conduct shaft-lineanalyses and optimize coupling to improve robustness ofthe train

Production procedures• NIDEC ASI’s Production Engineers designed andinstalled 2 new clean areas for rotor assembly, definingmethods and procedures to guarantee rotor vibrationaldynamics

Testing• To reduce technical risk, NIDEC ASI tailored the SystemTesting platform in our Monfalcone plant to perform a fullload back-to-back system test at 60 MW

Project managementNIDEC ASI designated 2 full time ProjectManagers to supervise the project. Byworking closely with the Main contractorand our internal Lean Manufacturing teamthey were able to optimize delliveryschedule to help recover delays from otherareas of the project (NIDEC ASI increaseddelivery from 1 machine to 2 machines permonth).

Oil Sands SolutionsSHOWCASE – Canada, Suncor Oil Sands

Suncor produces bitumen in the Canadian oilsands, which it expects to account for 90% of itstotal crude oil production.

Furthermore, Suncor has built the necessaryrefining capacity to convert the tar sands'synthetic oil into refined gasoline and oilproducts. This process allows the company tocapture the profits of the full hydrocarbon supplychain.

Suncor has refining capacity of 443,000 barrels ofoil equivalent per day (boe/day), with roughly halfof that capable of running on oil sand feeds.

By studying the solution with the customer andthe and existing technology (ChevronPhillips),NIDEC ASI was able to design a motor for directcoupling to the Slurry pump demonstrating a netenergy savings of 3- 5 % with respect to the useof a traditional 4 pole motor + gear box.

The Micomeri 7000 was conceived in the mid 1980sas a multipurpose offshore oil platform installationvessel that would be able to install very large oilproduction platform decks (known as integrateddecks) as well as the decks' supporting structures(known as jackets) using its two very large fullyrevolving cranes.

It would also be able to support the offshorecompletion of the platform by providing hotel andworkshop facilities for large construction crews.Saturation Diving facilities would support subseaconnection work. The vessel's size and semi-submersible form would allow it to operate in worseweather conditions than smaller and conventionallyshaped vessels.

PipelayingSHOWCASE – Micoperi 7000 (now Saipem 7000)

In the oil & gas extraction process the needs evolve as enviromental conditions change. Themachines installed on Micoperi were revamped for Saipem 7000. This action, thanks to NidecASI equipment, allowed the owner to reach new depths in high sea, strengthening theproductivity of the pipe laying platform.

PipelayingSHOWCASE – Russia, Blue Stream Project

Blue Stream is a major trans-Black Sea gaspipeline that carries natural gas from Russia intoTurkey

It is considered yet one of the deepest pipelines inthe world. It is laid in depths as low as 2.2kilometres (1.4 mi) which exceeds the averagedepths of well known subsea pipelines.

Advantages derived from NIDEC ASI equipment:laying operations performance up to 3000meters/day, high levels of reliability and precision inharsh enviromental conditions (deep waters, presence of corrosive elements and geologicalhazards), reduce mantenance costs.
