The goal of the UW Potato Breeding Program is
to develop potato cultivars that are genetically superior and that satisfy or exceed the standard for yield and grade in the fresh market and processing market
University of Wisconsin-MadisonPotato Breeding Outputs
Long Storage Chipping Lines (better than Snowden) Snowden consistently has commercial chip quality
through 6 months from 47ºF storage, and frequently from 7-8 months in storage
Specific Gravity similar or better than Snowden
Snowden consistently has specific gravity ≥ 1.080
High tuber yield, similar or better than
Snowden//Tuber shape?
Disease Resistance Snowden tolerates Verticillium wilt, early blight, has
some late blight tolerance and it is susceptible to common scab.
Glycoalkaloids
Snowden develops high total glycoalkaloids
Long Storage Chipping Breeding
Objectives
Nicolet (W2133-1) Pedigree: Snowden x S440
Yield potential and gravity are similar or better than Snowden
Maintains chip quality at least a month longer than Snowden from 45-48°F storages due to later increase in sugars.
Better tuber shape and uniformity than Snowden.
Low glycoalkaloid content, much lower than Snowden
