REVIEW ON DEFORESTATION

• 1947 forest coverage was close to 70%.• 1,591,303 Ha deforested from 1947 to 1992 (35,362

Ha/year).• In 1992 forest coverage was 49.3%• 377,264 Ha of forest were deforested between 1992 and

2000. • Deforestation rate increased to 47,158 Ha/year.• In 2000 forest coverage was just above 45%• Our goal since 2005 and for the next 3 to 5 years is to reduce

the deforestation rate to less than 31,000 Ha/year. • Long term goal (2015-2018): 0 Ha/year.

REDD: ObjectivesDevelopment Objective:

• Incentives to increase technical assistance and income for rural communities and help them better adapt to changes.

National Environmental Objective:• To establish the link between

mitigation and adaptation measures to help improve environmental quality, avoid deforestation and promote sustainable development. In other words establish an integrated watershed management program.

Global Environmental Objective: • Conservation of biodiversity of

international importance, protection and sustainable use of mountain and coastal forest ecosystems and climate change mitigation.

How do we get REDDy?Creation and strengthening of capacities to be provided with technical and

professional personnel in the topic of REDD (from the inspection and control, up to the evaluation and monitoring of results).

Update of information for the integrated management of hydrographic basins

Design and implementation of methodologies for the raising of the national forest historical baseline, as well as for the monitoring of the engagement and fulfillment of REDD objectives.

Tools and hardware to create a generation, administration and analysis of information system, as a tool for decision making, specifically for REDD

Strengthening of the indigenous peoples and other forest dwellers who reside or work in critical areas of deforestation, through community investment projects.

Climate Change Policy

Commitment to Combat Global Warming

For the government of Panama, climate change is a priority, both through adaptation and mitigation.

We believe CDM projects are of national interest, as well as important outside Panama’s borders, to help us face the threats of Global Warming as well as the current fuel oil crisis, through the establishment of renewable energy projects and other technologies that help reduce GHG emissions while driving towards a low carbon emission economy.

It’s in this sense that we believe that REDD initiatives will help contribute to achieve Sustainable Development and reduce vulnerability as well reduce deforestation.
