Recommendation #1

For private cloud, use a commercially supported OpenStack distribution

A number of companies offer a customized and supported cloud product that is based on OpenStack (e.g., Piston Cloud, Red Hat, etc.)

Unless you have a team of OpenStack experts, you shouldn’t be using the OpenStack Trunk bits.

Make KVM your default cloud hypervisor. Don’t force-fit vSphere into the solution.

Recommendation #2

Amazon remains the public cloud leader, by far.

Amazon has extended their lead as the preferred public cloud provider. They’re a low-cost leader, a market leader and a feature leader.

Don’t blindly go with AWS. If you’re mostly a Windows shop look at Azure. If you need better SLA’s, look at the boutique providers (e.g., VirtuStream)

Keep an eye on Google Compute, IBM SmartCloud and HP Cloud. They’re still early but promising.

Private Cloud: Recommendation 3

Extend OpenStack with AWS Platform Services & CloudFoundry.

OpenStack is a good foundation, but is more valuable when extended with platform services.

Red Hat offers OpenShift, Transcend Computing has TopStack (AWS compatible PaaS), VMware/Pivotal is championing, CloudFoundry and Docker is getting traction.

Recommendation #4

Configuration Management solutions should complement your PaaS

Tools like Puppet and Chef can be used to create a “faux-PaaS” ;-) it’s really more like “platforms-on-demand”

Use true PaaS to cover your important platforms (databases, app servers, etc.)

Use Puppet and Chef for “long-tail platforms” (or non-core) Salt and Ansible are gaining traction in early adopters

Use Hybrid Cloud Management Software

The dashboards that come with the cloud are clumsy and specific to one cloud; not good for general users.

Use Hybrid Cloud Management software Single pane of glass across clouds Centralized security Works with OpenStack & AWS Integrates with Puppet & Chef

Commercial only options: Dell Enstratius, RightScale, Red Hat CloudForms, BMC CLM

Open source options: Scalr & StackStudio
