The area of a rectangular field is 52000 m This rectangular area has been drawn on a map to the scale

1 cm to 100 m. The length is shown as 3.25 cmon the map. The breadth

A recIa lawn 60 metres by 40 metres has two roads each 5

metres wide running in the middle of it, one parallel to length and the

other parallel to breadth The cost of gravelling the roads at 60 paise per

SOLUTION

• TOTAL AREA OF ROAD: • Length = 5*60 = 300• Width direction = 5*40 = 200• Total 500• Less common area = 5*5 = 25.• Thus total road is 475• Total cost = 475 * .6 = Rs. 285 answer.


A sum of Rs. 18.45 is made up of 90 coins which are either. 10 paise coins or 25 paise coins. Find

the number of each type of coins.

• = 18.45/90 = .205 or 20.5 paise

• Using the principles of mixture, we can solve it :

A circle is inscribed inside a square. The ratio of the area of the circle to the area of the square is

pi/4 , Find the radius of the inscribed circle.

A square and a rhombus share the same base, however, the rhombus is inclined by 30degree. What is the

ratio of the area of the square of that of the rhombus ?

• Length of PR = sqrt(4^2 + 6^2)• = sqrt(16 + 36)• =sqrt (52) = 7.21• Radius = 3.605• Area of semi circle: • =22/7 * 3.605*3.605 = 40.84/2 = 20.42• Area of triangle = ½(4*6) = 12• Area of shaded region = 8.42 answer. `


A boat sails 18 km of a river stretch upstream in 6 hours and takes only

4½ hours to cover the same distance

downstream. What is the speed of the current?

Solution

• 18/6 = 3 km per hour (speed upstream)• 18/4.5 = 4 km per hour (speed

downstream)• Average of these two is 3.5 and the speed

of water is .5 km per hour• Or • (4-3)/2 = .5 KM per hour.


• Two friends ‘Bitthal’ and ‘Sunny’ start from the same point at the same time in the same direction on a circular cycle track 4 Km long. ‘Bitthal’ travels at a speed of 8 KM / Hour while ‘Sunny’ moves at 11 KM/hour When do they meet at the starting point again for the first time?


Solution

• Bitthal takes 30 minutes• Sunny takes 4/11*60 = 21.81 minutes• Now we shall take LCM of these: • 218.1 minutes or 3.63 hours • Or 3 hours and 38 minutes after the start

of the race.


• Two friends ‘Bitthal’ and ‘Sunny’ start from the same point at the same time in the same direction on a circular cycle track 4 Km long. ‘Bitthal’ travels at a speed of 8 KM / Hour while ‘Sunny’ moves at 11 KM/hour When do they meet again for the first time?


Solution

• Difference of their speed is 11-8 = 3• They will meet again at 4/3*60 = 80

minutes• Answer.


• Two friends ‘Hulash and ‘Rajesh’ start from the same point at the same time on a circular track, with ‘Hulash’ moving in the clockwise direction and ‘Rajesh’ in the anti-clockwise direction. The circumference of the track is 336 m. ‘Hulash’ moves at 6 m/s and ‘Rajesh’ moves at 8 m/s. When do they meet again for the first time?


Solution

• 336 / (8+6)• =24 seconds


• Two friends ‘Hulash and ‘Rajesh’ start from the same point at the same time on a circular track, with ‘Hulash’ moving in the clockwise direction and ‘Rajesh’ in the anti-clockwise direction. The circumference of the track is 336 m. ‘Hulash’ moves at 6 m/s and ‘Rajesh’ moves at 8 m/s. When do they meet again at the starting point for the first time?


Solution

• Hulash 336/6 = 56 seconds per round• Rajesh 336/8 = 42 seconds per round• LCM of 56 and 42 is 168 seconds• So they will meet at the starting point

again after 168 or 2 minutes and 48 seconds. Answer.


Time and work

• Two taps ‘A’ and ‘B’ can individually fill a tank in 12 and 18 hours respectively. The tan is already one third full. Both taps are opened and after 3 hours, tap ‘B’ is shut. How much more time will it take us to fill the the tank?


Solution …

• 1/12 + 1/18• =5/36 in one hour or 36/5 hours to fill the

complete tank. But we have to fill only 2/3 so it will take 24/5 hours to fill it. Both the pipes are kept open for 3 hours. 3*5/36 = 15/36 is again filled.

• =1 – (15/36 + 12/36) =9/36; • So only 9/36 is left out. • A can fill it in : 12*9/36 = 3 hour only


• ‘A’ is 20% more efficient than ‘B’. If they complete a piece of work in 30 days; in how many days would ‘A’ working alone complete the same work?

• Let us assume that A takes X days. B will take 1.2 X days.

• Let us assume that 1/x = Y• Y + Y /1.2 = 1/30• 2.2Y = 1.2 /30• Y = 1/55• That means A can do the work in 55 days

• Two taps ‘A’ and ‘B’ individually fill a tank in 8 and 12 hours respectively. There is a tap ‘C’ which can empty the entire tank in 24 hours. If the tank is empty, and all 3 taps are opened simultaneously, in how much time will it be full?

• 1/8 + 1/12 – 1/24• = (3+2 – 1)/24• =4/24 = 1/6 or in 6 hours the tank will be

• Two taps ‘A’ and ‘B’ can individually fill a tank in 16 and 24 hours respectively. A leak in the tank can empty the entire tank in 9 hours. If the tank is empty and both the taps are opened, how much time does it take the tank to be full?

Solution

• 1/16 + 1/24 – 1/9• (9+6 – 16) / 144• Here we can see that the answer is

coming in negative. Thus the tank can never be filled up (unless the leak is removed). Answer.

SOLUTION

• Both the angles are on AB. Angles on one segments are always equal, therefore D and C are equal = both with 80 angle.


What is the sum of cubes of the first 5 natural numbers?

• Formula • = [N (N+1)/2 ]^2• = [5*6 / 2 ]^2• =225 answer.


What is the sum of squares of the first 13 natural numbers?

• Formula• =[n(n+1)(2n+1) ] /6• =(13*14*27)/6• =819 answer.


In a Class of 80 pupils, the number of boys is three-fifths the number of girls. Determine the number of girls

in the class.

• Let the number of girls be X• X + 3/5X = 80• 8/5 X = 80• X = 80 *5/8• X = 50 (the number of girls is 50, boys are

30) answer.


The difference between two numbers is 30. On dividing the

greater by the smller the quotient is 3. Find the numbers.

• Let the smaller number be X. • 3X – X = 30• 2X =30; X = 15, • Thus 2 numbers are 15 and 45 answer.


Gunpowder contains 75% nitre and 10% sulphur. The rest of it is

charcoal. What is the amount of charcoal in 9 kg of gunpowder.

• Charcoal is (100 – 75 – 10) = 15% • 9 KG = 9000 Grams • 9000*15/100• =1350 grams answer.

Solution …

• Let the cost be 100• Final price being realised 133• It is after discount, so price before

discount (marked price) is : • 133*100/95 =140 , so 40 is the answer.


A vertical pole PO is standing at the centre 0 of a square ABCD. If AC

subtends an angle 90° at point P of the pole then the angle subtended

Solution

• When diagonal (in a square) makes angle of 90 degree in a pyrimidical shape, then sides make angles of 60 degree. (rule).

• So answer is 60 degrees.


Find the per cent of pure gold in 22 carat gold, if 24 carat gold is cent

per cent pure gold.

• 22/24 *100• =91.67 % answer.


In the diagram the two circles pass through each other’s centre. If the radius of each circle is 2, what is

the perimeter of the region marked B?


Solution

• Permieter of one circle is 2/3 now because, it is being cut by other circle.

• Thus 2/3 + 2/3 of perimeters added : • 2 * 2/3 * (formula of perimeter = 2pi *r)• =(8 * pi * r) /3 answer.


What is angle C?


Solution

• Angle O is double the angle A. Thus it is 100 degree. Thus C is (180 -100)/2 = 40 degrees answer.


What is angle a?


Solution • Angles from D and C are equal . • 180 – 60 – 37 – x• =83 – x• Let us sum up for two angles: • (180+180 ) = 360• 83-x + 83 – x + 180+2X = 360• 2Y +2X = 180 let us assume Y = 53 • 2X = 72 or X = 36 answer (solve by options,

so angle A = 53 ) answer.
