Navigation: The Dock

18Keynote Presentation: Intro to Mac

Bullet points will be animated to appear one point at a time. Title will be 48pt Times New Roman font, text will be 36pt.

Instead of putting icons on your desktop, Mac gives you the dock. MLTI puts it’s favorite applications on there, but you can customize the dock however you like by adding and removing icons. The location of the dock can be set to the left, bottom, or right of the screen. You can also hide the dock so it disappears when you don’t need it. You can see what applications are open because they have a blue light below them. All open applications appear on the dock along with your favorites.

Links will allow users to navigate from section to section. Page will have a link to skip to the next section, and to go back to the title page.

6Finder Navigation: Finder

• Acts similarly to the My Computer display on a PC. • Allows you to view all your files, folders, and Applications. • Access it from the dock by clicking on the Finder Icon.

18Keynote Presentation: Intro to Mac

To navigate and locate items on your computer, Mac gives you the finder. The finder is similar to the My Computer icon on your PC. The left menu provides you with shortcuts to common storage locations on your computer like the desktop, and documents folders. You can also locate the downloads folder, and the picture, music, and movie libraries. This is very helpful because you can look by location, or by file type and find your file.

Bullets will come in one at a time using animation. Picture will remain on screen the entire time. Title will be 48pt Times New Roman font, text will be 36pt.

Links will allow users to navigate from section to section. Page will have a link to skip to the next section, and to go back to the title page.

7Applications

Navigation: Applications•An application is the word Mac uses for a software program. •Your dock is set up to display the most commonly used MLTI applications•Many more available under the applications folder. •When an application is open, its icon is temporarily added to the dock.

18Keynote Presentation: Intro to Mac

An Application or App is the Mac word for a software program. As I explained before, not all apps are on the dock. You can explore all the apps on your computer using the menu available in the left hand column of finder. MLTI has loaded a wide range of education apps onto your computer, which we will explore in more detail later.

Picture and title will be visible from the start. Bullets will appear one line at a time. Title will be 48pt Times New Roman font, text will be 36pt.

8Applications 2

Navigation: Applications-continuedOpening and Closing Applications:• Light under a application icon on the dock

indicates the application is open. • Name of the active program appears next to the

Apple icon at the top left of your screen. • Closing a file does not close the program.

To close a program you can:• Use the Command+Q keyboard shortcut. • Right click on the Program Icon in the dock

(Control+Click, or two finger click) and select Quit.

• Select Quit from the Program Menu in the top left of the screen.

18Keynote Presentation: Intro to Mac

It’s important to note the difference between closing a file and quitting a program. You can close a file by clicking the red button in the top left corner. Notice the name of the application remains visible in the top left hand corner of the screen, and a light remains under the icon on the dock. To quit the program completely, you can use the shortcut Command+Q, Control+click on the program icon and select quit, or select quit from the program menu at the top of the screen. I always recommend you close programs you aren’t using for best performance, and always remember to shut down and restart your computer at the end of each day.

Sections will appear one at a time, bullet by bullet. A video will be inserted that illustrates how you can close a file but the program remains open. Titles will be 48pt Times New Roman font, bullet text will be 36pt.

18Keynote Presentation: Intro to Mac

If you don’t feel like using the Finder, the spotlight tool is the quickest way to find any file or application on your Mac. It is located in the top right corner of the screen and the icon looks like a magnifying glass. Simply type all or part of the name of the file or application you want and spotlight will find all of the closest matches on your computer. There is also a spotlight search inside of finder and Apple Mail. If you are using the web and want to find a word or phrase, hit Command+F.

Screen Saver: Select and customize a screen saver

1815Keynote Presentation: Intro to MacSystem Preferences 6

Images and items will appear grouped one at a time. Title will be 48pt Times New Roman font, text will be 36pt.

Mac provides Time Machine, which is an easy way to back up your computer. You can set it to back up regularly at set intervals to a remote location, or back it up any time you choose. 1 to 1 Preferences allows you to adjust the power saving settings on your computer, so it doesn’t go to sleep as often. The custom setting provided by MLTI provides a long battery life, but many people prefer to use presentation or DVD playback mode so their computer doesn’t constantly fall into sleep mode after 1 minutes of inactivity. The screen saver is an addition feature that allows you to personalize your computer. You can use a pre-made Mac screen saver, or create your own using your photos from iPhoto.
