BackgroundComputers have played a major roll in the lives of humans, but networking has played even more of a role. In 1969 when the project ARPA evolved, this gave way for a whole new future. Networking has become a part of life. Credit reports, medical records, banks are some of the few seen through the ability of networking. Today a car dealer in France can check the credit report of a man from the U.S. right from his monitor with the capabilities of a network.

LAN (Local Area Network) and WAN (Wide Area Network) are two mostly known Networks. A LAN is a network within a single office or building within a small area. WAN on the other hand is a group of a LAN’s networked together. The internet is an example of a WAN.

Problem and Purpose of Serafina’s Deli

Serfafina’s Deli has zero connection to the outside world through computers. All orders and records must be written on paper and then stored in a filing cabinet which holds very little but takes up a good amount of space. Menus constantly change and purchasing them often becomes expensive. The best solution for the problem we have encountered is a whole computer network installed which consists of 3 computers and a server. We will also purchase the correct software to create menus which will be found to be very helpful and a money saver.

Discussion

In such a little business a big network is not needed but yet a simple and inexpensive network is. All products must also be selected to be able to perform for many years to come without being outdated to quickly, which means that products will come heavily equipped with memory, fast processors, large hard drives etc. This makes for future updating a bit simpler and sometimes a bit cheaper.

WorkstationWhen choosing the workstation, Gateway and Dell were found to be the best companies for our needs. The main reason was because of the great support they had in cases of troubleshooting. All workstations were chosen with a flat screen monitor because of the small amount of space within the business. The choice between the two companies was the Gateway Professional S1700.

A laser printer was chosen for Serafina’s due to the printing that will be taking place with all the menus. An inkjet was considered but the concern for smudging, bleeding, and speed was a factor. The chosen laser was the Lexmark C720 color laser printer.
