Before Nyerere’s Time
Before WWI Tanzania was a colony of Germany. After the end of WWI in the treaty of Versailles it
grants Britain a League of Nations mandate to govern the former Germany’s property- which now acquires a new name, Tanganyika.
When Nyerere came back home in 1953 he immediately found a political group called TNUA (Tanganyika African National Union).
Tanzania was working on independence while Nyerere became President of the Union, entered the Legislative Council in 1958 and became chief minister in 1960.
Before Nyerere’s Time Continued Nyerere’s integrity, organization, and his willing
spirit to work with other groups help Tanzania to become independent and helped him to become president.
After a period of time Tanzania became independent in 1961.
Tanzania needed a leader so Nyerere stepped up to the plate and he was already known and became president in 1962.
Before Julius Nyerere became president Tanzania had no government. Now Tanzania is Republican.
Nyerere’s TimeNyerere was forced to choose between
political career and/or a teaching career. His standing in the political realm was
only accidental. He was introduced to a single-party state
in 1965 and it was called “African Socialism”
He also ran the country on a utopian guide line also.
To solve problems in his country they used simple and traditions solutions other than relying on foreign solutions.
He put education and literacy first and it had progress.
The Arusha Declaration
The Arusha Declaration puts agriculture at the center of the national economy and introduces a program of 'villagization' - meaning the moving of peasant families into cooperative villages where they can supposedly work together more productively.
This announces the introduction of a socialist state and is accompanied by the nationalization of key elements in the economy.
Foreign PolicyNyerere’s foreign policy
