Is Work Following You Home Through
Your
Mobile Phone?
By: Ashley Mayhew
Those who own a mobile phone work LONGER HOURS due to
the fact they can be reached
at any time.
Employees are staying “TURNED ON” past office hours making themselves available all the time.
“There is an expectation being set, that we are ALWAYS AVAILABLE, even on
vacation or after hours.”
“Many more people [are] TAKING WORK HOME and not properly ‘switching off’ (literally
and metaphorically).”
Smartphone users work 71 minutes longer/day on average.
“The average mobile phone user first
checks in on their device at 7:10 am...
...and last checks their device at 10:00
pm
30% of North America
33% of Europe
41% of Asia Pacific
“...agreed they were working longer hours because of mobile
communications.”
Why don’t WE just turn off
after work, on vacation and on our days off?
“Succeeding in today’s economy requires LIGHTENING-FAST
reflexes and ability to communicate and collaborate across the globe.”
In order to stay COMPETITIVE in the GLOBAL economy you must be able to be contacted at all
hours of the day.
“Companies have been willing to pay BIG BUCKS for longer work hours.” Making overtime emailing and
EXTRA HOURS of work attractive to young professionals.
“If you are HIGH enough in your
organization, you can simply make
yourself UNAVAILABLE.”
If you are climbing the CORPORATE LADDER, the key to success and
promotion is staying connected around the
clock.
“Social media has HEIGHTENED expectations for productivity, speed and efficiency, increasing pressure on the individual worker constantly
operate at PEAK performance levels.”
“Increasing use of cell phones and pagers may be blurring the boundaries between work and
home and raising STRESS levels in both places.”
Stress caused by extreme
PRESSURE at work and a lack
of relaxation time can be a health
risk.
“A long-term study showed that working more then 11 hours a day increases the risk of HEART disease by 67% compared with
working a standard 7-8 hour day.”
The future of technological communications is posing a major threat to the current work-life
balance in the workplace which creates a major concern for corporate HUMAN RESOURCE
departments.
Experts predict that the LINE between FAMILY and WORK will continue to blur in the future as
the use of mobile phones and other communication devices steadily increase.
“The question of ‘blurred boundaries’ may become an irrelevant one for the NEXT GENERATION of workers,
spouses and parents because they cannot imagine
life any other way.”
