Page 3: Introduction to Music Production- Categories of effects- Coursera

On this third assignment I will present to you the effects categories. Actually, I will focus on which plugins go in each category and which property of sound is related to each category.

AUDIO EFFECTS

The importance of Audio (sound) effects in music production is really paramount

In the mixing board we set up complex signal flows in a specific way that helps us use audio effects in the most appropriate way.

There are three categories of audio effects, which are related to three of the properties of sound.

CATEGORIES OF SOUND EFFECTS•Dynamic Effects•Delay Effects•Filter Effects

DYNAMIC EFFECTS

Dynamic Effects are related to amplitude - they automatically influence the volume

Dynamic Effects are: - Compressors - Limiters - Expanders - Noise Gates

• Compressor controls the highest and lowest peaks of sound• Limiter allows signals below a specified input power to pass unaffected and attenuates the peaks of stronger signals• Expander increases the dynamic range of the audio signal• Noise gate allows a signal to pass through only when it is above a set threshold

DELAY EFFECTS

Related to the propagation of sound -they give us a sense of space

Delay effects are: -Reverbs -Delays -Phasers -Flangers -Choruses

Delay effects create an illusion of three dimensionality

FILTER EFFECTS

Filter effects control the timbre of sound

Filter effects are : -High pass filter -Low pass filter -Band pass filter -parametric EQ -graphic EQ

In a DAW, effects may be referred to as DPS (Digital Signal Processing)

IN CONCLUSION

To wrap up, it is very important to pay attention to the way you set the signal flow in order to work better with the effects you want to apply .

Also it is very substantial to know the three categories of effects and how they influence the sound of your music

Course forums are a great place to take topics to, so that you can discuss them with your classmates and make some issues that complicate you about effects, more clear to you.

Do not hesitate to look for outside resources about audio effects, so that you can constitute a more complete knowledge about them.
