What is Linux ?
What is Linux
UNIX like Operating System Multi-user, Multitasking,
Multiprocessor Has the X Windows GUI Runs on multiple hardware
platforms Source Code is available
History of Linux In 80’s, Microsoft’s DOS was the dominant
OS for PC
Apple MAC was better, but expensive
UNIX was much better, but much, much
more expensive. Only for minicomputer for
commercial applications
People were looking for a UNIX based
system, which is cheaper and can run on PC
History of Linux Both DOS, MAC and UNIX were proprietary, i.e.,
the source code of their
kernel is protected
No modification is possible without paying high license fees
A famous professor Andrew Tanenbaum developed Minix, a simplified version of UNIX that runs on PC
–Minix is for class teaching only. No intention for
commercial use
History of Linux
In Sept 1991, Linus Torvalds, a second year
student of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki, developed the preliminary kernel of Linux, known as Linux version 0.0.1
Linux Today Linux has been used for many computing
platforms like PC, PDA, Supercomputers, ... Not only character interface but also user
interface is available
Linux Today
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Jaguar supercomputer, as of November 2009 the world's fastest supercomputer. It uses the Cray
Linux Environment as its operating system.
Linux Today
But what we mean byOpen Source ?!
Open Source Software When programmers on the Internet can
read, redistribute, and modify the source for a piece of software, it evolves
People improve it, people adapt it, people fix bugs. And this can happen at a speed that, compared to conventional software development, seems astonishing
How we can get it
Download it from the Internet
But ?? first choose your Distribution
Distribution !!!!?
Linux distros As Linux is open source so any one can
develop his own version.
Linux distros varies in Applications provided with each.
Market imposed on us some distros as standard
(Redhat, Debian, Slackware).
Most of current distros are based on Debian(Ubuntu) or Redhat (Fedora).
Popular Linux Distributions
Archlinux,
CentOS
Debian
Knoppix, a Live CD
Red Hat Enterprise Linux
Ubuntu
Fedora
Which is Suitable for Me?
Redhat is good for enterprise work.
Slackware is intended for Advanced
professional users.
Mandriva is very good for non technical user.
Opensuse is good for training usage
Fedora is good for personal use and developing
Debian is good for professional end-users.
Ubuntu is suitable for ALL !!!

Why you should use Linux
Forget about viruses
Security has always been the number one priority with Linux
Linux has a robust security system
There do not exist viruses for the Linux platform
Is your system is unstable !!
Have you ever lost your precious work because Windows crashed? Have you ever gotten the
"blue screen of death" or error messages telling you that the computer needs to be shut
down for obscure reasons?
Crashes or freezes are not prevalent in Linux
Linux is free
Linux is free and always will be as
compared to the very costly Windows and
Mac OSX
Using pirated Windows is a bad thing
Linux comes with software built it
When the system has installed, why would you still need to install stuff ?
Common software such as music player, web browser, video player, image editor, PDF reader, chat messenger, office apps
Linux comes with software built it
Update with few clicks !!
Just like Windows’ Update tool, Linux has a more
better alternative to it to update all your system
in a few clicks
Linux does not get slow
As Linux is impervious to viruses, trojans,
spywares, which are the main reasons to
slow down the PC, systems based on it do not get slower
Linux consumes lesser system resources
Linux can run on older hardware
Windows requires more and more hardwarepower as its version number increases (95,98, 2000, Me, XP, etc.). So if you want to
keep running Windows, you need toconstantly buy new hardware
Linux runs perfectly well on older hardware,on which Windows XP would probably evenrefuse to install, or let you wait 20 seconds
after each click
Support is everywhere
If you’re having a
problem with Linux, help is as close as the
nearest message board.
And more , more , more , more …..
Why not to switch to linux ?
Why not to switch to linux ?
If you are using any propriatory software
which is not supported by Linux
If you are using any hardware which is not
supported by Linux
Comparison between Linux and windows
I don't like to talk about this topic
You have to try with yourself and tell me
What you see :)
Conclusion
So, what OS a user should opt to choose?
The answer depends on user’s own choice
