INT 6143 – IT Infrastructure

The emergence of the Internet of Things as the most anticipated high impacttopic across all of technology creates great challenges andopportunities for IT leaders. It will change the way we live and work and willgenerate trillions of dollars in economic benefits in coming years. - Gartner

KEY FINDINGS ■ Why is the Internet of Things so important, and what are the business benefits? ■ What are the key technology and service building blocks for the Internet of Things? ■ How can enterprises build secure, scalable and reliable Internet of Things solutions?

Why is the Internet of Things so important, what are the business

benefits?

IoT key technology and service building blocks

• Most (but not all) of the technology will come from vendors• Endpoints of the IoT are represented by a very wide range of thing types.

• Bluetooth thermometers to Jet Engines• Vendors will look for a an acceptable ROI prior to development• Uncertainties still exist in standards, regulation and other governance

• New IoT standards emerge every few months which leads to further uncertainty• Middleware IoT hosting platforms are now available from a growing list of suppliers

• Integrate and link with applications, connectivity services & things, and often include agent software

Research

Connected Autonomous Vehicles

We will explore how the IoT disrupts existing value chains. For example, in a connected car, where is the value shifting? How will value be distributed among the car manufacturer/OEM, insurer, bank,CSP, device vendors or independent service provider? Many entities could stand to win — or lose— as they jostle for position in this new market. Identification of the value proposition will be criticalin these situations.

How can enterprises build secure, scalable and reliable Internet of Things solutions?

Few are doing it, but know they need to start.

Platform-based strategies that facilitate a solid and reliable solution.

Enterprises utilizing the IoT should expect the amount of information from things to rise sharply.

The scale of security risks is therefore much greater. Security is the No. 1 concern of enterprises of all kinds as highlighted in a recent IoT survey

IoT Architecture

• Mobile App Development maturing

• PLCs – programmable logic controllers

• APIs now being added to industrial systems

• Transition from Legacy systems to IoT architecture platform

Leveraging Existing

Other concerns….

• Needs for new skills, roles, processes and governance models.

• Security, privacy, quality and ethics.• Alternative approaches to integration to

referenced IoT architecture models as required by the stakeholders.

Next Steps for IoT – Business Leaders should…

• Explore the opportunities that IoT offers organization with urgency. Appoint individuals today to seek ideas as a first step.

• Identify and understand applications with IoT within your own industry initially – but look at other industries for parallels and a source of other ideas.

• Experiment with solutions through formal and informal teams that cross business boundaries. Allow them the freedom to reach out externally to other teams as they explore these opportunities.

• Participate in IoT standardization bodies and forums in order to ramp up your knowledge and establish contacts.

• Look at what preferred technology and service providers are doing on the IoT – where will they add value and what is their roadmap to support your potential IoT goals.
