How can what you learn in the CCC certification be used in the workplace to address shift to cloud?

CCC certification is based on a coverage of wide concepts / fundamentals of cloud computing. The CTA course, itself, is divided into 7 modules.

● Module 1 covers an introduction to the course and it’s objectives

● Module 2 begins with an Introduction to Cloud Computing. This module covers the widely adopted NIST definition of cloud computing, including the cloud’s essential characteristics, service models and deployment models. The module also highlights the benefits and challenges in cloud computing. Major cloud actors and various terminologies such as replication, resiliency, vendor lock-in, exit strategy, etc. are also introduced in this module.

● Module 3 introduces the concepts of virtualization, the backbone technology of cloud computing and its types and advantages. This module also provides a brief demo of creating and managing virtual machines in the cloud. This demo enables the participant to understand the practical working of the cloud services.

● Module 5 is based on Cloud Security, Risk, Compliance and Governance. This module extensively delves into the challenges faced by cloud computing while considering the different service and deployment models and their impact on business value and risk. Common attack vectors are identified and remediating controls are also considered and recommended.

● Module 6 focuses on the aspects of preparing for cloud adoption. An enterprise needs to identify which applications, architecture solutions, organizational capabilities, migration approaches and roles and responsibilities of service providers and their dependencies lead to a successful adoption of cloud computing services.

● Module 7, which is the last module of the course, introduces the NIST concepts, architecture, actors and lifecycle of Cloud Service Management such as Business Support, Provisioning and Configuration, and Portability and Interoperability. Several cloud management products are also mentioned in this course.

Real world scenarios based on concepts learnt during the course:

● Hybrid clouds - make use of the cloud bursting phenomenon. A couple of years ago, Flipkart and Snapdeal, 2 of Indian major e-tailers announced their first billionth-day sale, which ultimately resulted in disastrous performances. Unexpecting the demand for these sales, the sites could not cope up and went down several times during the day. Had they thought of or implemented cloud bursting, there would not have been such major issues.

● In order to implement business continuity, disaster recovery and a better performance (reducing latency), service providers such as AWS, Microsoft, Google and others build data centers in various regions of the world and support it with Content Delivery Networks (CDNs). AWS has 12 such regions and 54 CDN’s in the world today.

● New technologies such as Big Data, NoSQL storage systems and Internet-of-Things (IoT) are being supported by many service providers. AWS, for example, uses Hadoop, DynamoDB and IoT, whereas Microsoft makes use of HDInsight, DocumentDB and IoT Suite.

● Enterprises now use stronger security mechanisms to access the cloud - strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, federated identity which includes single sign-on, end-to-end homomorphic encryption, etc.

● Select the right service provider and develop a proper ‘exit’ strategy so that they are not ‘locked-into’ a proprietary service,

● Select the right cloud service and deployment model(s) so that resources are scaled and utilized efficiently,

● Invest into the appropriate cloud service and deployment models and other services so that cost-savings and security are balanced effectively,

● Test disaster-recovery systems and make use of High-Availability and Fault-Tolerance features

What’s next?

One of the options moving forward after achieving the CTA certification is to plan and study for one of the five CCC professional cloud courses.

Another option is to consider emerging prospects where the cloud interacts with several areas such as

● DevOps,● Cybersecurity,● Internet-of-Things (IoT),● Data Science and Machine Learning.

Note that before one enters into specialization in these areas, a very good understanding of the cloud concepts is a prerequisite.

Page 40: If You’re Out of Cloud, You’re Out of Work; Key Skills to Move into Cloud

What’s next?

The third option is to keep upgrading oneself to the latest developments in cloud computing.

1. For example, the new standard for application execution environments is seen to be the containers as against virtual machines. Containers have several advantages over virtual machines such as:

● They can be easily migrated among groups and facilitate continuous delivery.● They are much lighter than virtual machines, which raises hardware utilization rates and

improves economics.● They start much more quickly than virtual machines enabling rapid instantiation.

What’s next? - Sudhakar Nagasampagi

Another field to enter / master is virtualization.

There are several types of virtualization such as:

● Server virtualization● Storage virtualization● Network virtualization

➔ Software Defined Networking (SDN)➔ Network Functions Virtualization (NFV)

● Desktop virtualization● Application Virtualization
