In 1962, there was a declaration that the 25th of August would be the women day of the federation of Malaya. Women pledged their loyalty and to give their utmost services to the nation. Women would strive to improve the standards of society.

Work towards achievement of equality and justice in the public, political, economic and social field. Women would cooperate with men for peace, prosperity and understanding among all races.

Women in Malaysia where therefore empowered at the formation of our nation to sacrifice time and energy, surrender personal goals and dreams to come together for the greater good of all women and so inspiring generations of women develop self work and to become nation leaders. It was more than a strive for equality. It was a strive to lead.

By the next century Malaysia had many top women leaders in both the public and private sectors; Ministers, the National Bank Governor, Director General of Government Agencies and Directors and CEO’s of many public listed and private companies.

This has happened not only in Malaysia but globally thanks to the struggles of the past. Women in the 21st century have more equality then ever before. However the strive and struggle for equality still goes on despite the great many achievements. (Adibah Amin 2004 : 18)

Now in her tenth year as governor of the central bank of Malaysia, Dr. Aziz (often called Zeti in the domestic press) is the first woman to hold the post and has been ranked one of the world's top 10 central bankers by trade publications. The University of Pennsylvania economics Ph.D. assumed office, initially as acting governor, under awkward circumstances. Soft-spoken but no-nonsense, she oversaw the subsequent transition of the ringgit to a managed float in 2005 and the gradual relaxation of foreign exchange rules.

Through good relations established between her bank and its counterpart in China, direct renminbi-ringgit exchange was opened in August. This first such emerging-market window for the Chinese currency, outside the intermediary role of the U.S. dollar, is expected to spur bilateral goods trade.
