New Installations
vRealize Operations Manager 6.0Pre-Installation Considerations
• Best practices are evolving – this is a brand new version!!
• Proper sizing impacted by how many and what kind of Management Packs, objects (VM, Host, etc.), metrics, polling intervals, migration data, etc.
• Review documentation to determine node and cluster sizing• Verify adequate CPU / Memory / Disk is available• All data nodes in a cluster must be the same size• Use static IP addresses for Master & Master Replica• Node names should resolve in DNS forward / reverse / short / long• IP pools NOT required

CONFIDENTIAL 6
Sizing and Scalability
vRealize Operations Scalability
CONFIDENTIAL 8
Sizing by numbers:• Maximum number of 64,000 objects
– Five times better than 5.8.x, up from 12,000
• Maximum cluster size is a 8 node cluster• Does not include remote collectors• Certified for up to 30 remote collectors per cluster• 30 Adapter instances per cluster are supported• 4 concurrent users per node (or better)• High availability will use double resources and reduce maximums
– Objects down from 64,000 to 32,000
Node Sizing• Complete sizing and installation details
– Reference: vRealize Operations Manager vApp Deployment and Configuration Guide– Use the sizing guide and KB article 2093783 for correct sizing
• Four sizing options – mix of different sizing is not supported• Remote collector sizing – standard and large
CONFIDENTIAL 9
Metric Collection Profiles
CONFIDENTIAL 10
• Sizing is based on the 6.0 Default Metric Collection Profile• Balanced and Full Metric Collections Profiles go away:
– We now use the policies to control– Default is what we used to call “balanced”
• What if I migrate?– If you have Full, you will be moved to Balanced– The data will come over for historical purposes– But you will need to go into the policies and manually add the collections you need
How Many Nodes and Which Size?• Basic sizing guidelines (VMware® KB2093783)
– VMware Sphere® only
• Remote collectors are not part of this calculation
CONFIDENTIAL 11
How to Size an Advanced Environment (1)
CONFIDENTIAL 12
• Necessary when deploying any management packs besides VMware® vCenter Server™• Use the Advance Sizing Guideline Worksheet (VMware KB2093783)• Some management packs are included in the sizing documents (e.g. v4v)
– Fill in the number of objects
• For the remaining adapters it is best practice to test their size
How to Size an Advanced Environment (2)• Build a special vR Ops to help with sizing
– Take your best guess how to size this vR Ops (SM, MED, LG)– We will likely delete this vR Ops at the end
• Connect each adapter instance to this vR Ops – let it run for one hour– Add up the results in the Adapter Instance section shown below
• You can connect and disconnect adapter instances as needed to not overwhelm the system
Use this dataMake sure to click each node from table

Migrations Can Be Challenging• Customers can do simple scenarios by themselves
• Complex cases should be planned, tested and considered as professional services engagements
• For full migration details– Reference: vRealize Operations Manager Customization and Administration
Guide
• Considerations:– Sizing requirements– Performance considerations– Access rights changes– New grouping considerations– Custom dashboards– Custom reports
CONFIDENTIAL 16
Three Options for Migration
CONFIDENTIAL 17
• Start Fresh– No configuration and data is migrated– Usually combined with parallel operation of vC Ops & vR Ops– Typical scenario: No configuration and or test operation only
• Migrate only configuration– Good if no data needs to be migrated, but configuration should be preserved– Usually combined with parallel operation of vC Ops & vR Ops
• Migrate data and configuration– If everything should be preserved
Configuration and Data Migration or Start FreshConsider the extent to which 5.x is driving your customer’s operational decisions:
Is vCenter Operations Manager used for performance and health monitoring?• Do you act upon the performance alerts that are generated by vCenter Operations Manager?
Is any aspect of data in vCenter Operations Manager feeding another production system?• Raw metrics, alerts, reports, emails, etc.
Do you have a company policy to retain monitoring data?• Does your current vCenter Operations Manager instance fall into this category
If you answered YES to any of these questions you are a candidate for a FULL migration
Is vCenter Operations Manager 5.x used for capacity planning?• Actively reclaiming waste
• Re-allocating resources
• Running “what if” capacity planning scenarios for future projects.
• Adding resources based on stressed objects
CONFIDENTIAL 18
Migrate Configurations Only or Start FreshConsider the extent to which you have configured your 5.x deployment
CONFIDENTIAL 19
The current configuration is good and validated• Dashboards• Policies• Users• Super Metrics
I do not need to save the data I have collected• Just running in TEST• Not really using the data yet• Would operate a while side by side
If you answered YES to the above questions you are a candidate for a Configuration Only migration
Can I Do It Myself? Do I Need Help?• Regardless of migration or fresh installation???, all customers should answer these questions
• Use the chart below to score each of the items associated with your current vC Ops 5.x + environment in order to determine the “Complicating Factor” score
CONFIDENTIAL 20
Factor Notes
• if you have a single instance of vC Ops v5.x - GREEN• Multiple instances of vC Ops – YELLOW• If you have multiple instances where one includes a VDI – RED
Multiple instances may have been deployed for scaling concerns, operational usage patterns, or because VDI (V4V monitoring) and non-VDI vC Ops instances were necessary.
if your vC Ops system is manually configured for more than the default 6 months of historical data or adjusted the polling frequency - YELLOW
Exceptionally large data set will lengthen the overall time needed to complete the migration and therefore introduces risk which VMware Support can help to mitigate.
Can I Do It Myself? Do I Need Help?
CONFIDENTIAL 21
Factor Notes
Reference the vRealize Operations Management Pack 6.0 compatibility guide posted to solutions exchange:
• If you have a RED Management Pack – RED• If you have a YELLOW or Green Management Packs - YELLOW• If you have only GREEN Management Pack – GREEN
vRealize Operations 6.0 will support all official vRealize Management Packs but insuring the right version of the Management Pack is installed into v6.0 prior to migration, and that sufficient validation of associated Data, Dashboards, Alerts, etc are migrated is a 'complicating' factor.

CONFIDENTIAL 23
Factor Notes
If the sizing requirements suggest the need for a multi-node v6.0 deployment. (See the v6.0 Sizing Guide for details) – YELLOW
If the sizing requirements suggest the need for more than one v6.0 clusters/instances – RED
VMware Partner Support or Professional Services could be used to validate against an available sizing guide and consider the proper selection of Node size (XS, S, M, L)
Was the original implementation done by VMware Professional Services – RED
If the current vC Ops system(s) have VMware Professional Services, or you did deep-level customizations like custom integrations, scripting, non-standard configurations, use of Multi-Level Alerting, Custom Reporting, etc. – RED
These unique features are a complicating factor, any migration etc.needs to be validated upfront intensively
Can I Do It Myself? Do I Need Help?
CONFIDENTIAL 24
Factor Notes
If the current vC Ops instance(s) is the Windows/Linux"installable" form factor and/or vRealize Operations 6.0 is expected to be the Linux/Windows installable form factor. - YELLOW
This scenario will need to be validated, why was “installable” chosen, this usually comes with VMware customizations, which would require validation with VMware first.
If the new High-Availability deployment architecture is desired. - YELLOW
The suggested approach is to enable High-Availability AFTER the migration and validation is complete. Validate the approach upfront.
If the v5.x deployment(s) required the use of Remote Collectors. This is typically due to scale, offloading of incremental load, remote data centers or secure communication reasons. - YELLOW
VMware Professional Services will assist in the consideration of the use of Remote Collectors (or re-consideration if v5.x employs Remote Collectors)
Complication Factor Score Explained
CONFIDENTIAL 25
• If you see a factor that is RED– You should contact your VMware Partner account team or VMware Professional Services (if they
were involved with v5.x) before you proceed
• If you see any YELLOW factors– You should use caution: a validation/ test might help you to validate if the suggested approach is
applicable. If not, you should consider working with VMware Partner Support or your customer should involve VMware Professional Services for the migration
• All GREEN?– Do not expect any major issues and expect a smooth migration
VMware Provided PSO Services(Available to partners as SET’s and Services IPs)
CONFIDENTIAL 26
• vRealize Operations Manager Upgrade (also known as Migration) service (new for v6):– Migration service to move the legacy vCenter Operations Manager configuration and / or data to

Migration Options
CONFIDENTIAL 30
• Multiple 5.x instances to one 6.0 cluster– Migrate one by one
• vCenter Operations for View® instances into the same 6.0 cluster– Migrate one by one.
• Supported migration form factors– 5.x vApp 6.0 Virtual Appliance– 5.x Win/ Linux installable 6.0 Virtual Appliance– 5.x Win/ Linux installable 6.0 installable– Virtual appliance is preferred!
• Options for migrations– Migrate data and configurations– Migrate configurations and resources only
Migration Prerequisites and Preparation
CONFIDENTIAL 31
• For full migration details:– Reference: vRealize Operations Manager Customization and Administration Guide– Pay special attention to the sections before embarking on a migration:
• Decision to migrate or newly configure vRealize Operations Manager• Complexity of your environment: do you need PSO?
• Upgrade source systems to 5.8.1 or greater:– Including upgraded adapters where applicable, check release notes and with Adaptor vendors
• Bring up new instance(s) of the 6.0 Virtual Appliance as necessary:– Reference: Sizing guidelines in the vRealize Operations Manager vApp Deployment and
Configuration Guide• Create and start the 6.0 cluster
Migration Challenges
CONFIDENTIAL 32
• There is no roll back when a migration fails and does not restart– Create a snapshot of the entire 6.0 system– Failed migrations mean you can revert back to before migration– The source 5.x environment will still be running and collecting– Start a new migration to a new 6.0 instance– Call VMware Support Services if it persists
• Ensure the 6.0 system time is synced with the 5.8.x– Time zones in these two systems do not need to match
• Do not connect your 6.0 to a vCenter Server you are planning to migrate data for from a vCenter Operations Manager (vC Ops) 5.8– If you do, those objects will already exist in the 6.0 system and create a conflict
• Do not attempt a migration with 6.0 High Availability (HA) enabled– If migration requires HA, it is slowed down (requires twice the resources)
Migration Process
CONFIDENTIAL 33
• Run the Migration wizard:– Check 6.0.0 computing resource capacity: disk space, CPUs and memory– Installs a Migration Agent on the Source vC Ops 5.8.x environment– Alerts you to which Management Packs packs are needed. If the Management Pack does not exist on
6.0 data will NOT be migrated
• Migration can take a long time (hours or days, be patient)
• Many factors can impact migration performance, i.e. network bandwidth, underlying storage, thin provisioned disks, amount of data and resources, etc.– 6.0 can be monitoring previously discovered objects while migrating new objects
• Once migration is completed, the new data collection will begin automatically
Data and Configuration Migration Examples
CONFIDENTIAL 34
Migrated• Inventory and history
– Objects, relationships, properties, metric keys
• Metric data– All management (FSDB) and Capacity/Efficiency
• Alert Definitions
• Notification plugins/ configurations
• Applications and tiers
• 5.x polices and Attribute packages (converted to 6.0 policies)
• Authentication data– User accounts, user groups
• Configurations– Dashboards, tags, super metrics,
custom groups
NOT Migrated• Standard reports
• Custom reports
• Report templates
• Management Packs– Must be manually installed on target
• User password policy
Alert Migrations
CONFIDENTIAL 35
• Alert definitions will be migrated:– New alerts will be generated, as needed, based on the 6.0 alert definitions
• Notification plugins and configurations• KPI thresholds will become symptoms• Dynamic threshold violations become symptoms• Existing alerts (not definitions) will not be migrated, as they shall raise again if still existing
User Migrations
CONFIDENTIAL 36
• Users in vR Ops 6.0 will be migrated:– Local users (custom UI created)– vCenter based users– LDAP/ Active directory users/ user groups.
• User privileges and configuration may not be fully consistent:– Validate users to ensure correct sure access rights
Groups and Policies Migrations
CONFIDENTIAL 37
• 5.x policies will be migrated to 6.0:– As derived policies– Policy settings are not migrated (many are now N/A):
• Groups badge thresholds• Oversized virtual machines settings• Configure alerts section• Forecast and trends• Custom group associations• Under use settings
• Attribute packages will be converted to new policies• In 6.0 all resources are associated with "Default Policy”• Tags and custom groups will be converted to groups
Metrics Migrations
CONFIDENTIAL 38
• Super Metrics will be migrated:– Added to the policies– Turned off by default, you will need to manually turn them back on if still relevant
• Metrics that were disabled in version 5 attribute packages will be enabled in the corresponding version 6 policy– If there are enabled symptoms defined in version 6 that are based on those metrics
Dashboards and Reports Migrations
CONFIDENTIAL 39
• Custom UI dashboards will be migrated:– Dashboards require manual testing after migration– If any objects are not migrated, the associated dashboards will not display data or configurations will
drop out completely– If the same dashboards are already present in 6.0, they will be renamed with an number suffix
(“dashboard 1”, “dashboard 2”, etc.)• vC Ops 5.x reports will not be migrated
– Export to .csv or PDF, move off vApp– 6.0 reports replace most 5.x reports– Custom built XML reports can NOT be migrated

Procedures Depending on Matrix Mark (1)
CONFIDENTIAL 41
• Use 5.8 MGMT Pack for 6.0 (data migrated)– Install the 5.8 Management Pack on the 6.0 cluster (migration will prompt if not installed)– Do not configure an instance of the adapter, in most cases they will be automatically created during the migration– Click the Migrate button
• Supports 5.8 MP to 6.0 MP Upgrade (data migrated)– Install the 6.0 Management Pack on the 6.0 cluster (migration will prompt if not installed)– Do not configure an instance of the adapter, in most cases they will be automatically created– Click the Migrate button
Procedures Depending on Matrix Mark (2)
CONFIDENTIAL 42
• If marked “does not” support 5.8 MP to 6.0 MP upgrade (data migrated)– Install the 6.0 MGMT pack on the 6.0 cluster (migration will prompt if not installed)– Click the Migrate button– Configure an instance of the adapter and start fresh with collection.
• In the end: check the dashboards– You will get duplicates for every existing Management Pack dashboard– The migrated dashboards will be labeled as “Dashboard 1”
What If I Do Not Install an Adapter?
CONFIDENTIAL 43
• If you decide not to install the missing adapters the migration will skip migrating their resources
• Consequence of skipping adapter installation:– Dashboards, alerts, custom groups, super metrics that use these resources will also be skipped– Once the migration is finished, you can not migrate from the same 5.8.x source to the same 6.0 target again, even if
the missing adapter is installed later– Once 6.0 starts collecting new data for a resource you cannot add history later
• Customer can add any adapter to 6.0 later
