HDR Photography
• Set of Techniques with origins dating back to 1850s
• Allows greater ranges of luminance between light and dark areas of an image
• Achieve details in the highlights and shadows of an image at the same time
Under and Overexposed Images
Viewing Problem
• Traditional screens (CRTs, LCDs) and printers display a low dynamic range (LDR) of luminance (300 levels)
• Human eyes have a high dynamic range of luminance detection (50,000 levels)
• We don’t have a good way to view real HDR images (yet)
Tone Mapping
• Until display and print technology catches up we have to map HDR images to LDR images
• Global and local algorithms
• Tries to balance strong contrast reduction and image details in shadows/highlights

Panoramic Photography
• Elongated field of view (160° x 75° or greater)
• Techniques dating back to 1850s
• Rotate camera about the nodal point – the optical point from which the focal
length is measured
• Eliminate parallax
