Agenda

High Availability & Disaster Recovery

New offerings with SAP HANA Storage Replication

New features for SAP HANA System Replication

o Multi Tier System Replication allowing first 1:n setups:

Three cascading systems in a row

o Zero Downtime maintenance

o Compressed log transfer

o Basic encryption for internal communication

Multi Tier System ReplicationFirst 1:n setups: Three cascading systems in a row

Since SPS 07 SAP HANA System

Replication allows chains of

databases with more than one

shadow system.

Multi Tier System Replication

(Cascading systems)

Different transfer modes –

(SYNC/ASYNC) can be combined.

Allows more sophisticated landscapes

where System Replication can fuel

not only one other data center.

Further extensions of this 1:n concept

are planned for later releases

Zero Downtime maintenanceFeatured by SAP NetWeaver ABAP stack

As an evolution of “Near Zero Downtime Maintenance”, SPS 07 now offers

Zero Downtime Maintenance

Based on connectivity suspend feature of the SAP NetWeaver ABAP stack (SAP note 1913302)

oDBSL of the database interface decouples transaction management between ABAP and HANA database

o This keeps transaction on ABAP layer alive and allows to change components (software versions) on the

layers below on secondary (shadow) HANA instance

When used in combination with SAP HANA software update, command line tool hdbupd has to used to do the

update of SAP HANA software on secondary (HLM can not work without an online database and the secondary

is not reachable without connecting it through the primary HANA instance)

Compressed log transferReduction of transfer amount

HANA Log pages transfer with SAP HANA System Replication before SPS 07

Uncompressed

Same format as log pages in online Log Volumes

Size 4kB up to 1 MB granularity

Commit can force the IO system to write down smaller chunks (log pages) because of synchronous character

With SPS 07 the free space in these log pages can be compressed during transfer time

Commits often produce nearly empty pages which now can be shortened

Reduction of over all transfer amount.

On secondary, these shortened pages are refit individually into official sized page and stored into log volumes

Basic encryption for internal communicationOne security layer to rule them all

Consolidating encryption entities

Client communication encryption already available for long time (SSL)

Realized on individual usage and engine

Implementing a general purpose, basic encryption layer for all internal and external

communication needs

SAP HANA System Replication uses this new option for the internal communication
