Global Warming

• Global warming is an increase in the Earth's atmospheric and oceanic temperatures

• Global warming is getting worse every year due to the high amounts of pollution surrounding Earth

Should Question

• Should people be forced to “go green” and buy less polluted items to prevent global warming

• For example using compact fluorescent light bulbs, using re-usable bags, or changing your air filters are ways to reduce carbon dioxide in your household

• Air pollution is one of greatest forms of pollution that increases the effects of global warming

• An air pollutant is known as a substance in the air that can cause harm to humans and the environment. Pollutants can be in the form of solid particles, liquid droplets, or gases. In addition, they may be natural or man-made.

Global Warming

• Pollutants can be classified as either primary or secondary. Usually, primary pollutants are substances directly emitted from a process, such as ash from a volcanic eruption, the carbon monoxide gas from a motor vehicle exhaust or sulfur dioxide released from factories

Page 7: Government Assignment 4

Global Warming

• Secondary pollutants are not emitted directly. Rather, they form in the air when primary pollutants react or interact. An important example of a secondary pollutant is ground level ozone - one of the many secondary pollutants that make up photochemical smog

Federal policies

• The Federal government created agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency also known as the EPA, the Department of Transportation, the Department of Energy, and the Department of Agriculture to work together to protect the environment with respect to greenhouse gas emissions

Federal Policies

• For example the EPA created an act called the Clean Air Act to reduce the amount of pollution the motor vehicles created. The Clean Air Act is the law that defines EPA's responsibilities for protecting and improving the nation's air quality and the stratospheric ozone layer

State Policies

• In the state of California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger created an act called the California Global Warming Solutions Act in the year 2006. This act established the first in the world comprehensive program of regulatory and market mechanisms to achieve real cost-effective reductions of green house gas emissions

Local Policies

• Local governments such as Suffolk County on long island are helping prevent global warming by reducing energy usage and incorporate new energy saving technology that are installed in new buildings and facilities. Suffolk County Becomes the First Municipality to Adopt The Clean Energy Action Plan

Page 15: Government Assignment 4

Local Policies

• This Plan will be a clear set of policies and projects aimed at reducing energy usage and utilizing cleaner technologies to provide greater energy efficiency

Survey

• The results of my survey conclude that the opinions of the people who took my survey mainly agree global warming is real and should be resolved in a environment friendly manner
