The Finnish Game Industry• In 2015, the Finnish game industry grew in all indicators.
• The amount of games published, the amount of employees and the total turnover increased.
The vast majority, over 95 % of the revenue came from exports.
From a national economy perspective, the game industry is the most relevant content export industry.
During last years The Finnish game industry has grown faster than the global game market, CAGR 2004 – 2015 is 45%.

WHAT WE DO?
Organize trade missions /events, coordinate cross-industry
development projects, cooperate with ministries and the political
sector, organize domestic networking events, promote Finnish game
industry, create and maintain media relations both domestically and
internationally, produce surveys, statisticcs and reports related to the
Finnish game industry etc.

• Finnish game studios are mainly young companies and start-ups.
• Altogether 200 game studios have been established during the last four years.
• The Finnish game industry held a total of 290 companies in 2015: 250 limited-liability companies, 30 trader entrepreneurs and 10 cooperatives.
• According to Neogames’ statistics, 29 new companies were founded in 2015. The amount is half of what were founded in the record year of 2012 (55).
A third of the new companies were so-called Second Round Start-ups
Around 20 of the 290 companies were founded more than ten years ago.

Locations of the studios• The Finnish game industry is
concentrated in the capital area (38%)
• Compared to our previous studies in 2009 and 2011, the role of capital area is decreasing.
• In 2009, the share of the capital area was 64% and in 2011 52%.
• 62% of Studios the are located in the local growth hubs around Finland (Turku, Kymenlaakso, Tampere, Jyväskylä, Oulu, Kajaani, Joensuu)

• Well over 150 commercial games were published in Finland in 2015, in all the major platforms (mobile, console, PC).
• Some games were also published on new platforms such as the smart watch (Apple Watch) and VR (virtual reality / Oculus Rift).
• Finnish industry is still mobile driven. The majority of sales and the biggest financial successes in 2015 came from mobile games.
• However, the mobile game market’s tough competition made it difficult for new companies to emerge.
• The expenses of marketing and the cost of UA (User Aqcuisition) increased.

• Steam, an Internet-based digital distribution platform for PCs gained popularity also in amongst Finnish game developers
• Alltogether around 30 PC or console games were published in Finland in 2015.

• The relative turnover meaning turnover/employee of the Finnish game industry has been growing much faster than the number of people employed by the industry.
• The industry employed 2700 people at the end of 2015 and despite Rovio’s lay-offs in the autumn, the amount of industry employees increased by 200.
• The Finnish Game Jam and Assembly drew people interested in games as a hobby
• The Finnish Game Jam’s main event gathered 689 game enthusiasts, in 15 different towns. Finland is certainly one of the most active game developer countries in non-professional developers too.
• The same active trend can also be seen in eSports.

• At the moment there are well over 20 studios with a turnover over 1 million euro
• Small number of studios generate the majority of turnover• Eight Finnish companies received a significant foreign investment
in 2015, for a total worth of 40 million dollars (36 million euros). • The larger part of the investments came from the
western market, but in a few cases from Asian investors as well.
• Neogames estimates that the revenue of the Finnish game industry was about 2,4 billion euros in 2015. Compared with 2014, the industry grew 33 percent.
• Investments are not included in the turnover figures
