CHAPTER ONESOME GIVENS ABOUT SLA• CONCEPTS:• CONTEXT OF LEARNING: ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH
LANGUAGES ARE LEARNED.• SECOND LANGUAGE CONTEXT• FOREINGN LANGUAGE CONTEXT
Characteristics of SLA:
• 1. SLA involves the creation of an implicit (unconscious) linguistic system.
• 2. SLA is complex and consists of different processes.
• 3.SLA is dynamic but slow: The implicit system one creates evolves over time.
Acquisition order vs. developmental stages4. Most L2 learners fall short of native like competence
CHAPTER TWO
INPUT
• Common meaning: Refers to some kind of explicit information about something.
• Second Language Acquisition: Language that a learner HEARS or READS that has some kind of communicative intent (Message).
• Learner job is to understand that message, to COMPREHEND THE MEANING of the utterance or sentence.
• Input must be COMPREHENSIBLE
• There are two kinds of input:
Conversational
•Language learners HEAR in the context of some kind of communicative EXCHANGE.
Non-conversational
•Language that a learner hears when she or he is NOT PART of the interaction.
The Developing System
Progress,Evolving,changing
Unity,Diverse,Common purpose
Different component forming a whole, working together
A linguistic system also has multiple component that act as whole
1. A network of associations
2. A syntactic component consisting of rules
3. A set of competences
Components:
• Comprehension
• Speech production
• Learning• Social
