Page 3: Forms of energy

Mechanical Energy

Deals with the motion of an object

ExamplesRunningFlipping

Page 4: Forms of energy

Thermal Energy

Made from the atoms moving in an object Atoms are the building blocks of

matter

We associate this with heat

Heat causes the atoms to move faster

Thermal energy is involved when boiling liquids

Chemical Energy Energy stored in bonds of chemical

compounds Chemical compounds are the

combination of atoms and molecules Water is a chemical compound – it is

the combination of oxygen and hydrogen molecules

When you eat, you release chemical energy

Chemical energy could be released during chemical reactions as well.

Electrical Energy

The moving of electrical charges that produces electricity and energy

Examples: Anything that requires

electricity to work…like your TV, your computer

Nuclear Energy Energy that is stored in the nucleus of an atom

from fission of fusion The nucleus is the center of the atom that

contains the protons and neutrons (electrons are found outside of the nucleus)

Fission – one atom SPLITS into two Uranium is usually used in nuclear power

plants The Uranium atom is split to release nuclear

energy

Fusion - two atoms COMBINE into one This only occurs in the sun!!!
