3-5 Year Vision

• May meeting of 10 stakeholders– Came out of DuraSpace Summit

• Goal: Common 3-5 year vision– Vision will be longer term– Will NOT affect 4.0 release in late 2013

• Vision & Discussion session at OR13• Early “draft” of that vision today

DSpace will:1.Focus on IR fundamentals, modern

use cases2.Be lean & flexible3.Include “core IR” functionality which

can be extended4.Be designed to integrate well5.Support low-cost, hosted

solutions

Draft 3-5yr Vision

1. Focus on IR

“Institutional Repository” at heart

• Core functionality = “current & anticipated IR use cases”– Not same use cases as 10 yrs ago

• Non-Core = implement via third-party plugins

Page 9: DSpace RoadMap and Vision (at 2013 OAI8 DSpace User Group)

2. Lean & Flexible

Do NOT attempt to do or be everything

• Instead: lean, focused system

• But, support third-party plugins

Page 10: DSpace RoadMap and Vision (at 2013 OAI8 DSpace User Group)

3. Core IR Use Cases

What is “out-of-the-box”vs

What may be a third-party plugin

• We need to determine what these core use cases are, together

Page 11: DSpace RoadMap and Vision (at 2013 OAI8 DSpace User Group)

4. Designed to Integrate

Standalone systems are a thing of the past

• Provide integration points for others to build against

• Build our own integrations with external systems

Page 12: DSpace RoadMap and Vision (at 2013 OAI8 DSpace User Group)

5. Support hosted

Web-based Configuration & Setup

• Easy to setup / install whether on your local server or hosted

• Most options / configs should be customizable via a web UI

Page 13: DSpace RoadMap and Vision (at 2013 OAI8 DSpace User Group)

A Possible Vision?

DSpace as a “WordPress-like” IR?

• Easy to install / “just works”• Large, active support community• Diverse third-party plugins / themes• Manage most everything from web UI

(including plugins / themes)

Page 14: DSpace RoadMap and Vision (at 2013 OAI8 DSpace User Group)

Next Steps

• Proposed Vision at OR13– Discussion session with OR13 attendees

• Additional feedback via email / wiki• Collaborate with Tech Team on a

possible Technical RoadMap• Begin to locate funding / volunteers
