Data Centre Pricing in Europe – Main trends
Telecom Providers in Europe are building large new campus facilities, suitable for networks, cloud & hosting services. Providers such as Portugal Telecom, Telefonica, Orange Business Services and T-Systems are consolidating their existing facilities into a handful of large facilities, with T-Systems closing 12 facilities since 2012.
Regional Data Centres are providing price competition to established city facilities. Regional facilities in cities such as Nice, Brittany, Montpellier & Marseilles (France) and Liverpool, Newcastle, Manchester, Birmingham and Norwich (UK) are under-cutting the price of established facilities in Paris and London.
The European Data Centre market is dominated by the four largest markets of the UK, Germany, France & the Netherlands, which accounts for half of European Data Centre power & space. In established markets seven Data Centre providers account for up to 50 per cent of power and space, with providers such as e-shelter (now NTT Com) offering space in multiple locations.
New Data Centre capacity is acting as a brake on pricing across the market, with revenues from selected providers declining over time. Interxion has reported a fall of 6.2 per cent in revenues per m2 for the year to the end of 2014, and TelecityGroup has reported a decline of 3 per cent in annual revenues per kW for the year to the end of 2014. European Data Centre revenues per m2 are falling as the market matures.
