What is Output? What is Output? What is Output? What is Output?

What is output? Data that has been processed into a useful form

Output device is any hardware component that can convey information to one or more people

What is a display device? Output device that visually conveys text,

graphics, and video information Information on display device sometimes

called soft copy Monitor houses display device that is packaged

6

Monitor houses display device that is packaged as separate peripheral

What is an LCD monitor (flat panel)? Uses L iquid Crystal Display Produce sharp, flicker-free images Have a small footprint Some are wall mountable LCD monitor sizes: 15,17,18,19,20,21,22,23 inches

 Measured diagonally

7

Measured diagonally Mobile devices that contain LCD screens include:

Notebook computer (14.1,15.4,17,20.1 inches), Tablet PC (8.4 – 14.1 inches), ultra personal computer (5 – 7 inches), portable media player (1.5 – 3 inches), smart phone (2.5 – 3.5 inches), and PDA (average of 3.5 inches)

What about using multiple LCD monitors? Some users position two or more monitors side-

by-side or stacked Position 2 monitors together for wider screen area

Convenient to run multiple programs simultaneously – music editors, web developers,

8

simultaneously – music editors, web developers, video editors, researchers, gamers, engineers,..

What is resolution?

 Sharpness and clarity of image

Number of horizontal and vertical pixels in a display device

11

clarity of image

Higher resolution makes image sharper, displays more text on screen, makes some elements smaller

How do you use an LCD monitor with a video card? GPU, Graphic processing unit: graphics chip – control

manipulation & display of graphics on a display device integrated on motherboard or on video card (graphics card) in a slot on motherboard

Video card contain a fan/heat sink

12

Video card contain a fan/heat sink LCD monitor use digital signal – plugged in a Digital Video

Interface (DVI ) port a computer System unit has integrated DVI chip or contain a video card with

a DVI port, standard monitor port & an S-video port (connect DVD player/video recorder to

computer)

Plasma MonitorPlasma MonitorPlasma MonitorPlasma Monitor

What is a plasma monitor? Displays image by applying voltage to layer of gas

Larger screen size and richer colors than LCD, but are more expensive

14

Page 15: CSC1100 - Chapter04 - Output

LCD & Plasma TechnologiesLCD & Plasma TechnologiesLCD & Plasma TechnologiesLCD & Plasma Technologies

LCD technology:Contain fluorescent tubes that

emit light waves towards liquid-crystal cells, which are sandwiched btw 2 sheets of material

Electrical charges passes

Plasma monitor features:More than 60 inches widthLarger screen sizes & richer

colorsMore expensiveAlso can hand directly on wall

15

Electrical charges passes through the cells

Cells twist – cause some light waves to be blocked & allow others to pass through –creating images on the display

Plasma gas technology:Sandwiches a layer of gas btw

2 glass platesVoltage applied – gas releases

ultraviolet (UV) light – cause pixels on screen to glow & form images

What is digital television (DTV) and high-definition television (HDTV)?

Many programs can bebroadcast on a single

digital channel

All broadcast stationstransmit digital signals

High resolution

16

Great for game playing, watching movies, and browsing the Internet

HDTV HDTV (high(high--definition television)definition television)is the most advanced form

of digital TV

Uses digital signals to producecrisper, higher-quality output

on LCD and plasma televisions

CRT MonitorsCRT MonitorsCRT MonitorsCRT Monitors

What is a CRT monitor? Contains cathode-ray

tube (CRT) Screen coated with tiny

dots of phosphor material Each dot consists of a red,

17

Each dot consists of a red, blue, and green phosphor

Common sizes are 15, 17, 19, 21, and 22 inches Viewable size is diagonal

measurement of actual viewing area

Page 18: CSC1100 - Chapter04 - Output

CRT MonitorsCRT MonitorsCRT MonitorsCRT Monitors

CRT - Large, sealed glass tube

Screen placed the front of the tube

Screen coated by tiny dots of phosphor material Each dot (each pixel) has a red, a green & a blue phosphor

Electron beam moves back & forth across the back of the screen –cause dots of screen to glow, producing images on screen

18

cause dots of screen to glow, producing images on screen

Less expensive, produce more heat & uses more power than LCD

Produce less Electromagnetic Radiation(EMR ) Magnetic field travel at speed of light but for short distance High quality CRT apply MPR II standards – have acceptable

EMR levels for monitors

What determines the quality of a CRT monitor? Screen resolution

Refresh rate/scan rate (in Hz, e.g. 68Hz) : Speed at which monitor redraws images on screen Num of times image is drawn per second

Text created with a smaller dot pitch is easier to read

20

Num of times image is drawn per second Should be fast enough to maintain a constant flicker-

free image

What is a nonimpact printer? Forms characters and graphics without striking paper

Ink-jet printer sprays tiny drops of liquid ink onto paper or uses heat or pressure to create images Prints in black-and-white or color on a variety

24

Prints in black-and-white or color on a variety of paper types

How does an ink-jet printer work?print head

26

Step 1. A small resistor heats the ink, causing the ink to boil and form a vapor bubble.

Step 2. The vapor bubble forces the ink through the nozzle.

Step 3. Ink drops onto the paper.

Step 4. As the vapor bubble collapses, fresh ink is drawn into the firing chamber.

What is a photo printer? Color printer that produces

photo-lab-quality pictures Many photo printers have a

built-in card slot PictBridge is a standard

27

PictBridge is a standard technology that allows you to print pictures directly from a digital camera

Page 28: CSC1100 - Chapter04 - Output

PrintersPrintersPrintersPrinters

What is a laser printer? High-speed, high-quality

nonimpact printer Prints text and graphics in

high-quality resolution, ranging from 1,200 to 2,400 dpi

28

ranging from 1,200 to 2,400 dpi Typically costs more than

ink-jet printer, but is much faster
