Studio Layout & Operation Live audio (Vocals) is recorded through a
microphone, or other recording devices, and is then transferred and saved into, any type of
software that allows it to be stored, edited and transformed into another format
GENERAL STUDIO LAYOUT
Recording and Playback FormatsRecording is the process of capturing and storing any kind of data (in this case sound) and transferring the information into a disk,
tape or file. Playback formats are what is used to store the recording, such as
CD, Tape or PC File, these formats are called playback formats, because they allow you to play back the audio you have captured
onto them as many times as you desire
File Transfers and Transfer Bays File transfer/file transferring is the act of transmitting an audio file from a computer to another computer,
file transfers can apply when transferring audio file to the internet
File transfers are useful in storing (backing up) audio or information that could be lost, and it can be used to edit or view audio on more than one computer or
device.
Linear and Non Linear Recoding Systems
Non Linear systems are recording systems that allow any parts of the recording to be played back
in any order with no gaps. Linear Recording Systems are recording devices that need to be
transferred into a pc or editing software in order to achieve this.Linear Recoding Systems Non Linear Recoding
Systems
ISDN
ISDN (standing for) Integrated Services Digital Network is a set of communication standards for simultaneous digital transmission of voice, video,
data, and other network services over the traditional circuits of the public switched telephone
network.
Delay Lines Delay is generally the amount of time it takes from something to reach one destination to another, in terms of audio production, delay lines refer to the
amount of time it takes for a head of signal to travel from the sender, this could be to a radio, or
computer.
Profanity and BlasphemyProfanity and Blasphemy are big issues to take in
consideration when recording and/or producing music in the commercial industry as theses issues can effect how your
music and image is perceived.
Profanity is the act of disrespect towards a person or objectBlasphemy is the act of disrespect of god and offending
related religions
Effects There are many different effects that can be used in a
recording studio to create a track, some of these include.
PhaserA phaser is an audio signal processing technique used to filter a signal by creating a series of peaks and troughs in the frequency spectrum. The position of the peaks and troughs is typically modulated so that they vary over time, creating a sweeping effect. For this purpose, phaser usually include a low-frequency oscillator.
Delay Delay is an audio effect which records an input signal to an audio storage medium, and then plays it back after a period of time.
Pitch Bend A smooth uninterrupted glide in passing from one tone to another, especially with the voice or a bowed stringed instrument.Distortion
Distortion effects create "warm", "dirty" and "fuzzy" sounds by compressing the peaks of a musical instrument's sound wave and adding overtones.
Talk BoxA talk box is an effects unit that allows a musician to modify the sound of a musical instrument. The musician controls the modification by lip syncing, or by changing the shape of their mouth.
VibratoVibrato is a musical effect consisting of a regular, pulsating change of pitch. It is used to add expression to vocal and instrumental music. Vibrato is typically characterized in terms of two factors: the amount of pitch variation ("extent of vibrato") and the speed with which the pitch is varied ("rate of vibrato").
CompressionAudio compression is a form of data compression designed to reduce the transmission bandwidth requirement of digital audio streams and the storage size of audio files. Audio compression algorithms are implemented in computer software as audio codecs.
Sequences A sequence is a long series of audio that’s put
together to create one long track, (in film this is a series of shots that have been put together to
make the entire film
Production and Post-production Stages and
ProcessesThe Production Stage- would involve the actual making of the track , this would involve deciding on the equipment and recording the song
Post Production Stage- The post production stage would involve mastering and mixing the audio that is already recorded
PRODUCTION ROLESThere are many different production roles in a recording studio, which could include:
• Producer• Vocalist • Sound Engineer • Back Up Singers • A Band • Vocal Coach • Sound Mixer
LEGAL ISSUES
Copyright
Copyright is a legal concept, enacted by most governments, giving the creator of an original
work exclusive rights to it, usually for a limited time. Generally, it is "the right to copy", but also gives the
copyright holder the right to be credited for the work, to determine who may adapt the work to
other forms, who may perform the work, who may financially benefit from it, and other related rights.
Performing rights
Performing rights are the right to perform music in public. It is part of copyright law and demands
payment to the music’s composer/lyricist and publisher (with
the royalties generally split 50/50 between the two). Public performance means that a musician or group
who is not the copyright holder is performing a piece of music live, as opposed to the playback of a
pre-recorded song.
Licenses
A license may be granted by a party ("licensor") to another party ("licensee") as an element of an agreement between those parties. A shorthand
definition of a license is "an authorization (by the licensor) to use the licensed material (by the licensee)."In particular, a license may be issued by authorities, to allow an activity that would otherwise be forbidden. It may require paying a fee and/or proving a capability.
The requirement may also serve to keep the authorities informed on a type of activity, and to give them the
opportunity to set conditions and limitations.
Contract
A contract is an agreement having a lawful object entered into voluntarily by two or
more parties, each of whom intends to create one or more legal obligations between them.
