Cogeneration technology is fast emerging as an efficient, eco-friendly and cost effective energy alternative in India

Co-generation is defined as the sequential generation of two forms of useful energy from a single primary energy source, typically electrical and thermal energies

The thermal energy can be used in various applications like exhaust gas boilers, absorption chillers for air-conditioning, hot water generation and refrigeration

Energy cost = Cost of Power Generation – Waste Heat Recovery

Cogeneration can enable more than 80% efficiency due to lower losses

Cogeneration will increasingly play a critical role in light of recent developments in NCR Power Landscape

Recent Developments

The gap between supply and demand is likely to continue in the near future

Over Rs.75,000 crore loss to power discoms

Multiple escalation in Diesel prices – Still OMC’s making a loss

• Rs.7 per litre loss borne by OMC’s

Benefits of Cogeneration

• Lower maintenance costs (for both

VAM and gensets)

• Better control - reduced pilferage and

adulteration of fuel

• Improved reliability - no uninformed

power cuts or fuel shortages

Case Study – Leading Mall in South Delhi

The business group is replicating the cogeneration model in all upcoming projects

Why did they opt for cogeneration?

•Demanding customers – wanted uninterrupted power supply

•Multiple usages of waste heat – cooling, chilling, boilers etc.

•Business group convinced of benefits

•Power situation was unreliable

Comment by the mall executive:“ Once our management experienced the

benefits of gas based generation, they are not looking at anything else ”

How has their experience been so far?

•No Gas supply disruptions in more than 12 months of their operations

•Dedicated operators from OEMs are stationed on site – ensures smooth operations

•Overall extremely satisfied
