What’s CoderDojo?

• CoderDojo all started in James Whelton’s school in Cork in early 2011

• Volunteer-led clubs for kids between 7 and 17 can discover how to code

• As of Sept 2014, there’s over 500 verified CoderDojos in 50 countries!

• Now, there’s a CoderDojo in Dunlavin (www.facebook.com/dunlavincoderdojo)

What’s the cost?

* Insurance costs? • CoderDojo is organised and run by volunteers and everyone gives their time for free

• One caveat - there may be a small charge for insurance for this venue (TBC).

Responsibilities?

• The Mentors and our Support team give their time for our CoderDojo for free

• There’s a waiting-list already open for this CoderDojo, so demand is high

• If you can’t be responsible, attend regularly, cause trouble, then there are others

who will be asked to join in your place

Who can join CoderDojo

7 to 17 years old • The general guidance is that kids from 7 to 17 are welcome to CoderDojo

• Older kids will usually have major exams on their minds but are welcome too

Supervision, young kids

Kids under 12? Parents must stay

• Parents of kids under 12 must be present at all times, no exceptions please.

• Parents are also encouraged to participate, encourage, and learn with their kids too

Our Technology?

• We’ll start off with Scratch 2.0, which is a great app to start learning how to code

• We’ll progress to more complex coding in Python, HTML, Raspberry Pi if requested

Hardware, Software, Power

• Please have 1 Laptop for each child, but 2 kids can share 1 laptop for a while too

• Scratch 2.0, Python and HTML can be run on most basic, low-spec laptops, we

don’t need Internet access in class (No Internet access helps to focus minds too!)
