Current State of Play
• Today there are many different clouds
• Each cloud typically has own unique interface
• There is disparity between capabilities
• Makes it difficult to develop cross platform
• Potential lock in is red flag for end users
• Not great for providers or end users
There needs to be a better way...

How Open Cloud Standards Will Help
• Enable interop between clouds
• Enable developers to package once, deploy anywhere
• Enable tool vendors to support more clouds
• Reduce lock in for end users
• Leading to wider adoption of cloud services in general
• Allow for development of horizontal players

What Cloud Standards Exist Today?
• Defacto Standards
– Amazon EC2 API interface
– Amazon S3 API interface
• Open Standards
– OpenStack Compute
– OpenStack Storage
– Open Cloud Compute Interface (OCCI)
– Common Data Management Interface (CDMI)

OpenStack
• Consortium of cloud companies led by foundation members Rackspace and NASA
• Open source compute and storage stack for building compute and storage clouds
• Compute API based on RAX Cloud Servers API
• Storage API based on RAX Cloud Files API
• Gaining widespread support and momentum

Open Cloud Compute Interface
• Open community lead cloud API spec delivered by Open Grid Forum (OGF)
• First spec targets IaaS compute
• Further specs to target PaaS & SaaS
• Focused on Integration, Portability, Interopand Extensibility
• Recommended by UK government as the cloud interface for use in G-Cloud
