Phases of the Cell CyclePgs. 246-252
Interphase – G1 Rapid growth & activity
Interphase – S Growth & DNA replication
Interphase – G2 Growth & prep for mitosis,centrioles
Prophase Chromosomes become visible
Metaphase Chromosomes line up across center
Anaphase Chromatids separate & move to ends
Telophase Nuclear division is completed
Cytokinesis Division of the cytoplasm
Interphase•Busiest part of the cell cycle•Cells make ATP•Repair themselves•Excrete wastes•Make proteins•Produce new organelles•Copy chromosomes
Prophase
• Longest phase of mitosis• Chromatin coils into
visible chromosomes• Nucleus begins to
disappear• Centrioles migrate to
opposite ends of the cell• Spindle fibers are formed
between the centrioles
Metaphase
• Shortest phase
• Chromosomes line up across the center of the cell
• Microtubules (spindle fiber) attach to centromeres
Anaphase
• Centromeres split
• Sister chromatids are pulled apart to opposite poles of the cell.
Telophase• Final phase• Nuclear envelope and
nucleous reappear• Chromosomes begin to
uncoil• Double membrane
begins to form• Nuclear division is complete
Cytokinesis (late telophase)
• Division of the cytoplasm occurs
• 2 daughter cells are formed
• Each new cell has a complete set of chromosomes
• New cell begins interphase
