The main purpose of the BICC 2012 Study is to understand how to establish a successful BICC
Main focus of the studyPoint of entry
BICC 2012 Study
The study from 2010 identified why companies should establish a BICC.
The 2012 Study builds on to the 2010 Study and investigates how companies can realize the benefits of having a BICC.
The main goal is to summarize the findings to serve as a guide for organizations that consider establishing or improving a BICC by learning from other companies’ experience.
The findings are presented in a stepwise guide on how to establish a BICC.
How do organizational aspects influence a company’s set up of a BICC?
What useful experiences can be derived from the establishment process?
Which different types of BICCs exist and which responsibilities have been assigned?
What benefits can be obtained and how?
How to establish a successful BICC?

A wide range of companies from different sectors, all operating in the Norwegian market, were interviewed in the BICC 2012 Study
Companies interviewed in the study
17 companies have been examined in the BICC 2012 Study , with the number of employees varying from 90 – 25 000. 13 companies are registered in Norway, while the remaining are registered in Sweden and Denmark. 8 companies have established a BICC, while 8 companies are planning on implementing a BICC within a year, or in the near future. One of the companies
has no plan of establishing a BICC within their organization. For convenience, companies without an existing BICC are grouped in the category labeled “Planned BICC” throughout the study .
Interviews were performed with personnel holding BI key roles within each organization.

Findings
In the BICC 2010 Study, only 2 out of the 8 organizations had established a BICC, and an additional 2 were planning to establish one.
Among the 17 participants in the BICC 2012 Study, 8 additional companies had established a BICC, and 8 more are planning to establish one within either a short or long term horizon.
The “oldest” BICC in the study has existed for 3 years. Of the BICCs in the BICC 2012 Study, half were
established in 2011. This indicates a strong growth in the establishment rate of recent years.
Number of companies with an established BICC
The BICC 2012 Study clearly indicates that establishing a BICC is an increasing trend in the Norwegian market

Use of BI (index) - indicates the level of use of BI. The distribution is based on questions related to the utilization of BI solutions in the organization, and for which purposes and processes the BI solutions are
being used.
The study includes companies ranging from high to low BI complexity and use of BI
BI complexity (index) – indicates the complexity of the BI solutions. Questions related to the number of data warehouses, IT/Business environments, and the level of complexity in the BI solutions are used to distribute the companies along the axis.

Companies with a BICC use BI across the entire organization while companies without a BICC mainly use BI in the Finance, IT and Analytical units

Findings
Companies with a BICC have a broader use of BI across business units, with the exception of IT and Finance.
Two possible hypothesis may explain this finding:1. A BICC is more often established in
companies with a relatively broader use of BI across several business units.
2. Establishing a BICC leads to broader use of BI across business units.
As most of the BICCs in the study are quite recently established (50% in 2011), one can argue that the first hypothesis is more likely than the second.
